The NY Jets returned to practice on Sunday following a two-day break, and they did so with quite a bit of fanfare. Free-agent running back Dalvin Cook was in attendance for the practice as he was preparing for his official meeting with the Jets.

Cook's appearance undoubtedly garnered the majority of headlines, but with less than a week until the team's preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns, the Jets had some important business to attend to.

Wide receiver Garrett Wilson sat out with what the Jets are calling a low-ankle sprain. Wilson is expected to miss around a week. Allen Lazard returned to practice for the first time and participated in team drills. Randall Cobb, freshly activated off the PUP list, also practiced but was held out of team drills.

Let's take a look at some players who managed to stand out amongst the Dalvin Cook frenzy — for better or worse — on Sunday.

Standout: Jermaine Johnson, DE, NY Jets

You'd be hard-pressed to find a player on the Jets roster who has impressed more than Jermaine Johnson this summer. Johnson continues to be the standout of training camp.

The 2022 first-round pick recorded yet another sack on Sunday, blowing past Tyler Conklin for a would-be sack of Aaron Rodgers. The play continued, and Rodgers found Conklin open in the flats, but if this were a real game, Rodgers would have gotten leveled.

Johnson has been working primarily with the first-team defense ahead of Carl Lawson this summer — a strong indication of where the Jets see him on the depth chart entering the regular season.

After a quiet rookie season, Johnson appears ready to take a big leap in his second year in the NFL. He was also seen chatting with fellow Florida State alumnus Dalvin Cook on the sideline, for what it's worth.

Standout: D.J. Reed, CB, NY Jets

It's flown a little under the radar, but one Jets player who is also having an excellent camp is D.J. Reed. The perennially underrated and overlooked Reed put together another strong day on Sunday.

Reed ran stride for stride with wide receiver Malik Taylor and knocked the ball away on a beautiful deep ball from Aaron Rodgers. This comes a few days after Reed made this (see tweet below) spectacular leaping pass breakup.

Reed is never going to dominant headlines the way that Sauce Gardner does, but the former Seattle Seahawks cornerback is one of the best players at his position in the NFL. He's proving that again this summer.

Dud: Zach Wilson, QB, NY Jets

Zach Wilson had strung together a few good practices before he took a step back on Sunday. The former second-overall pick finished just 4-of-8 in team drills, including three consecutive inaccurate passes that led to incompletions.

The only incompletion of Wilson's day that wasn't a result of an inaccurate pass came on a Mecole Hardman drop in red-zone drills. The ball hit Hardman in the hands and probably should have been caught, but Wilson probably put a little too much zip on the ball too.

Elsewhere, Wilson did have a nice completion over the middle of the field to undrafted wide receiver Jason Brownlee, but it was the lone highlight in an otherwise forgettable afternoon for the young QB.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh told reporters after practice that Wilson is slated to play in Thursday's Hall of Fame Game. The team will have the opportunity to get an extended look at their third-year quarterback.

Standout: Zonovan Knight, RB, NY Jets

Amidst a potential Dalvin Cook signing, Zonovan Knight continues to prove why he deserves a spot on the Jets' roster despite the external addition they're looking to make.

Knight had a pair of touchdowns in Thursday's practice and once again looked like the best running back at practice on Sunday. The NC State product bounced a couple of runs to the outside, showing good speed to pick up pretty large gains.

On one of those runs, Quinnen Williams broke through into the backfield, only for Knight to evade him and turn what could've been a busted play into a sizable pickup.

Knight is competing with Michael Carter and Israel Abanikanda for the top backup running back job, although that could change with the addition of Cook. If Cook is signed, Carter seems more likely to be the odd man out at this stage.

Dud: Joe Tippmann, C, NY Jets

The Jets have high hopes for their 2023 draft class, but it probably isn't wise to expect this year's rookies to play a prominent role early on. Case in point: Joe Tippmann.

The Jets' second-round pick has worked exclusively with the third-team offense this summer behind both Connor McGovern and Wes Schweitzer. Tippmann was guilty of a bad snap to quarterback Chris Streveler on Sunday, which likely isn't going to help him climb up the depth chart, either.

It's still early, but it seems unlikely right now that Tippmann will do enough to earn the starting job coming out of training camp. He just hadn't made enough progress so far this summer.

Tippmann should receive plenty of playing time in this Thursday's Hall of Fame Game. Here's to hoping he makes a strong impression and is able to challenge for the starting job in the near future.
