The NY Jets learned firsthand the value of a backup quarterback last season, and the expectation is that the team won't repeat their mistake again in 2024. The team is expected to be active in their pursuit of a veteran backup QB.

If you ask Jets cornerback D.J. Reed, he already has one player earmarked as an appealing target. Reed responded to a tweet about the Jets' reported interest in Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell with a different suggestion.

Reed is eyeing fellow Commanders quarterback Jacoby Brissett as a target for the Jets this offseason. The veteran quarterback is set to be a free agent this offseason and is expected to be among the top backup QB options available on the open market.

Brissett has his fans in the Jets building, and he seems like a logical option if the team wants to spend big on a backup QB. Evidently, he would have the support of the locker room as well.

Jacoby Brissett is an ideal backup QB target for the NY Jets

Brissett spent last season as Howell's backup in Washington, and while he didn't start a game, his most extensive playing time came in his team's Christmas Eve matchup against the Jets.

Brissett helped engineer a second-half Commanders comeback, which nearly resulted in a win. Washington benched Howell for Brissett, only for the latter to suffer an injury in practice before he could start a game.

Still, Brissett proved in 2022 that he is more than capable of starting at the NFL level. The former Patriots third-round pick started 11 games for the Cleveland Browns, completing 64 percent of his passes and throwing 16 touchdowns to go along with just six interceptions.

With nearly 50 career starts under his belt, you aren't going to find many better backup quarterback options in the NFL. Brissett starts on at least a handful of teams.

It won't be cheap to sign Brissett this offseason, as the 31-year-old signed a one-year, $8 million contract with the Commanders in 2023. The Jets, however, seem intent on paying top dollar to secure a reliable backup QB.

The Jets made the mistake of relying on Zach Wilson as the team's primary backup quarterback in 2023, and the results speak for themselves. It's worth wondering just how far a QB like Brissett could have taken the Jets last season.

The current Jets regime is well aware that they need to win this season to keep their jobs. There will be no more excuses. Having a competent backup plan behind Aaron Rodgers is a necessity.

It's not often you see star players campaigning for their team to sign a backup quarterback. That speaks to Brissett's reputation around the league and the Jets' obvious need to add a veteran backup QB.
