Potential NY Jets quarterback target Derek Carr was officially released by the Las Vegas Raiders on Tuesday, ending a nine-year tenure with the organization that drafted him. Now, the games begin.

The Jets are seen as one of the most likely landing spots for Carr this offseason, but the four-time Pro Bowler will take his time and assess his options. There will be plenty of competition for him.

Carr already visited with the New Orleans Saints prior to his release last week, and it's expected that he will visit with other teams in the coming days and weeks. The Jets figure to be one of those teams.

Apart from the Saints, the Jets were the only other team to inquire about Carr's availability while he was still under contract with the Raiders. The first quarterback domino of the offseason has officially fallen.

Other NY Jets news

Jets QB pecking order has been revealed

SNY's Connor Hughes released an interesting report on Tuesday that seemed to reveal the Jets' preferred pecking order for their quarterback options. While much of the takeaway from the report was the inclusion of Ryan Tannehill, those headlines buried the lede.

Tannehill is, indeed, an option for the Jets, but he's firmly behind Aaron Rodgers, Derek Carr, and Jimmy Garoppolo, in that order. Rodgers is the Jets' clear top option with Carr in second and Garoppolo in third. Tannehill is their last-resort fourth choice.

This order should come as no surprise. The Jets' reported "infatuation" with Rodgers has been well documented to this point and he's clearly emerged as their preferred target.

Carr is widely seen as the second-best option on the market behind Rodgers, and he has experience with new Jets passing game coordinator Todd Downing. Garoppolo and Tannehill are essentially the fallback options if the Jets miss out on their top choices.

Aaron Rodgers darkness retreat timeline

On Tuesday, Aaron Rodgers made his final weekly appearance on the Pat McAfee Show before his darkness retreat, and he revealed the supposed timeline of his independent isolation.

Rodgers told McAfee that his so-called "darkness retreat" is set to begin at the end of this week. The 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback previously indicated that the seclusion will be a four-night event, although it should be noted that his own self-reporting of the timeline for his retreat has been spotty.

Rodgers insists that he will have a better idea as to what the future holds at the end of his four-day isolation period. That could mean staying in Green Bay, it could mean retiring, or it could mean forcing a trade to a new team.

The Packers remain open to all three possibilities, although it certainly seems as though both sides would prefer to part ways. The Jets should have some clarity on Rodgers' status by next week.
