The New York Jets are coming off what some might consider a moral victory in a close loss to the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night.
We will ignore the questionable decisions by the officials and simply say, the Jets very well could have won that football game. But, sitting at 1-3, the Jets are staring at a tough road to the playoffs. Despite the solid outing by Zach Wilson, I'm not sure fans are convinced he can get it done in the long term.
With the Minnesota Vikings also at 1-3 and Kirk Cousins out of contract after this year, why not make a phone call? Heck, better yet, why not call the Las Vegas Raiders about Davante Adams, who seems to be unhappy and wanting out?
Let's just have some fun with hypotheticals, here, shall we?
Davante Adams Trade Number 1
The first trade New York could propose for Adams includes a 2024 first rounder, plus wide receiver Xavier Gipson and running back Michael Carter. Adams would undoubtedly fetch at least a first-round pick, but maybe the Raiders want a couple of young players as well.
Gipson, an undrafted rookie, has shown flashes of speed and dynamic ability with the ball in his hands. Meanwhile, Carter is third on the depth chart but still a viable pass-catching running back who could offer the Raiders some depth behind Josh Jacobs.
Imagine the possibilities with Garrett Wilson and Davante Adams on the same offense. Now, imagine that offense with an experienced, qualified quarterback under center as well.
Kirk Cousins Trade Number 1
The Vikings likely aren't ready to throw in the towel on this season just yet, but they have the Kansas City Chiefs this coming week and could fall to 1-4. If that happens, why not just focus on the future? Cousins is not going to be part of future seasons in Minnesota; at least that's what many fans will tell you.
The Jets, meanwhile, could use a quarterback like Cousins. He gets a lot of criticism, but Cousins is still one of the better quarterbacks in the league. He is top five in both passing yards and touchdowns through four weeks, and certainly isn't the reason for the Vikings' 1-3 start.
In this deal, the Vikings would get Zach Wilson to start things off. Maybe, a change of scenery would be good for Wilson. Kevin O'Connell could potentially turn things around for the young quarterback, and playing with Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison couldn't hurt either.
Minnesota would also get a third rounder next year, plus a fourth-round pick in 2025. That might seem like a lot for a quarterback rental, but if the Jets are able to compete for a Super Bowl, it would be well-worth it.
Davante Adams Trade Number 2
Another option to try and land Adams could be if the Raiders simply wanted draft capital in return. This is an organization that looks closer to a rebuild than they do competing, so stacking draft assets would be of interest to Las Vegas, rather than accumulating additional players.
Again, Adams' price would likely start at a first-round pick. He was traded to Las Vegas in exchange for a first and second rounder from Green Bay, and the price tag probably hasn't changed much in a little over a year.
In this deal, the Jets give up their first and sixth-round picks next year, along with a third rounder in 2025. The Raiders have to be happy with netting three picks for Adams, especially considering he just isn't happy there.
Don't forget, another aspect of this equation is how the Raiders handled the Derek Carr situation last year, treating him poorly and booting him out after he finished as the team's all-time leading passer. Carr and Adams are good friends and were college teammates, and that has to play into his unhappiness as well.
Kirk Cousins Trade Number 2
Like the second Adams proposal, the Jets could choose to simply give up picks for Cousins. It would hurt their immediate future in terms of draft capital, especially knowing what they gave up for Aaron Rodgers. New York would be out of quite a bit of draft picks in the coming draft or two, but again, it could mean a chance at a Super Bowl.
In this deal, the Jets simply give up a second rounder in 2025 and a third rounder in 2024. This would also mean the Vikings have thrown the white flag on their 2023 season and are looking toward the 2024 NFL Draft to find their franchise quarterback of the future.
Back to New York for a moment. We haven't even talked about the defense, here. But, the Jets defense is of course one of the best in all of football. This is a unit that's ready to win. If the Jets can somehow figure out a way to score 25 points per game offensively, they will have a legitimate shot at winning it all.
Why wouldn't you do everything you possibly could, to win it this year, knowing Rodgers could come back in 2024 and give you a shot to do it again?
