The NY Jets only had one primetime game last year but now that Aaron Rodgers is scheduled to be their quarterback, expect multiple night games.
Rodgers' former team, the Green Bay Packers, had five primetime games last year, and they only finished with one more win than the Jets. As such, there's going to be a ton of attention on the Jets this year, and it wouldn't be shocking if they had a Thursday, Sunday, and Monday night game on their schedule.
For those of us Jets fans with a family or social life, the idea that this team will play on a day other than Sunday afternoon is a blessing to us.
For the past decade, we've been used to maneuvering our Sunday plans to accommodate a Jets game, and usually a Jets loss, but now there should be multiple weeks where we'll have uninterrupted freedom to watch this team play.
For the first time in forever, football fans who aren't even Jets fans will be interested in our team and will want to watch them on the biggest game of the night, whether that's Thursday, Sunday, or Monday. It's never been more fun to be a fan, so here are five potential primetime games for the Jets next season.
NY Jets vs. Kansas City Chiefs
Of all the potential games I'll write about today, this seems like the biggest lock for a primetime matchup. Four-time NFL MVP Rodgers versus the reigning NFL/Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes and his defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs is much-watch television and could be the highest-rated regular season game of the year.
Imagine how loud MetLife Stadium would be if the Jets faced off against Mahomes. Not only would the battle of old versus young and Rogers versus Mahomes be the biggest storyline, but watching the Jets' defense against Kansas City would be very interesting.
The Jets' defense faired well last year against some great quarterbacks, but there be no bigger test than Mahomes.
NY Jets @ Dallas Cowboys
The Cowboys also led the NFL alongside the Packers last year with five primetime games, so it seems very obvious that one of the networks would be interested in a primetime matchup of the Cowboys versus the Jets. But let's add one more wrinkle into this game to make it even spicier for the fans at home.
What if the recently released Ezekiel Elliott joins the Jets roster this offseason, alongside Rodgers? It's not as crazy as it sounds, as New York currently has the sixth-best odds of acquiring his talents.
With Breece Hall still recovering from injury and the team looking to add more running back depth, Elliott could be a good fit as he looks for redemption.
Whether Elliott joins the Jets or not, this primetime matchup seems very feasible. Rodgers is still one of the biggest names in the NFL, while the Dallas Cowboys are still the biggest draw in football (regardless of their record). As a result, it seems like a perfect fit for these two to play on Thursday, Sunday, or Monday night.
NY Jets vs. Los Angeles Chargers
Los Angeles Chargers fans are probably still recovering from that terrible loss against the Jacksonville Jaguars a few months ago, but they're still a fun team to watch.
Justin Herbert is turning into one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, and that matchup of him versus Rodgers should be good enough for a primetime game.
The Chargers had five primetime games last year and shouldn't be much worse, so it would make a lot of sense to pair them against the Jets in a big game this year.
The Chargers have been a disappointing franchise, despite making the playoffs with Herbert, but they don't typically disappoint in primetime games. They've had plenty of exciting finishes, and that should be no different if they faced off against the Jets in a big game this season.
NY Jets vs. Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles are only a few weeks removed from playing in one of the greatest Super Bowls of all time and there's no reason to believe they won't be as competitive next season. Jalen Hurts had a breakout campaign, proving to the football world that he's an MVP candidate, while the Eagles' defense was tough to play against.
We already predicted that the Jets would play the Chiefs in a primetime game this year, so it wouldn't be shocking for them to play their Super Bowl opponent this season as well.
NY Jets vs. or @ Buffalo Bills
Last but not least, the Bills face the Jets twice this year, and there's no doubt that one of these games will be a primetime match-up. We all know that Mahomes versus Rodgers is a big game, but Josh Allen versus Rodgers in an AFC East battle will be just as important.
For the first time in a decade, the Jets could actually win the AFC East. I repeat, for the first time in a decade, the Jets may actually win the AFC East. With the Jets and Bills typically playing against each other in one of the last regular season games each year, it would make a lot of sense to schedule one of those as a primetime game.
It's quite possible that, if the TV networks schedule this game perfectly, a matchup between the Bills and Jets in late December or January could be for the AFC East crown.
As a Jets fan for 20 years, meaningful regular season football late in the regular season would be incredible theatre, and something all of us are hoping for.
