The NY Jets have officially fired head coach Adam Gase after two seasons.

The NY Jets have officially parted ways with head coach Adam Gase after two disappointing seasons with the organization.

As first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Jets announced Gase’s firing shortly after the team’s Week 17 loss to the New England Patriots.

This report was soon confirmed by an official statement from team owner Christopher Johnson. Johnson insisted that he met with Gase on Sunday and informed him that he would be relieved of his duties.

The owner went on to say that the Jets “have not been good enough” and promised to do everything they could do “build a strong organization on and off the field.”

Below is Johnson’s full statement.

The NY Jets have finally moved on from Adam Gase

Gase was hired shortly after the conclusion of the 2018 season to be Todd Bowles’ replacement. Despite coming off an unsuccessful tenure with the Miami Dolphins, the Jets gave Gase the job — a move that was heavily scrutinized at the time.

And two years later, it’s safe to say that the decision to hire Gase was a massive failure.

Gase began his first season with a 1-7 record due in part to injuries and abysmal offensive play. The Jets managed to rattle off six wins in their final eight games partially due to a cupcake schedule and they finished a surprising 7-9.

But the writing was on the wall that this strong finish was nothing more than fool’s gold.

Gase returned in 2020 and it quickly became evident that this Jets team was not going to compete. The Jets one-upped their 2019 selves getting off to a woeful 0-13 start with embarrassingly close losses to both the New England Patriots and Las Vegas Raiders.

They seemed destined for the No. 1 overall pick, only to miraculously win a pair of games against quality foes late in the season. But in Week 17, they played their usual brand of uninspiring football en route to a loss — a fitting way to end Gase’s tenure in New York.

Gase will finish with a 9-23 record with the Jets as the franchise will begin its search for their next head coach. Per Connor Hughes of The Athletic, that search will be led by general manager Joe Douglas.

The Adam Gase era always seemed doomed to fail from the start. And 32 dreadful games later, the Jets have finally moved on.

Next man up.
