The NY Jets have reportedly added another piece of offensive line depth by signing versatile veteran offensive guard/center Josh Andrews.

NY Jets general manager Joe Douglas has held true to his promise of addressing the offensive line this offseason and he continued to do so by signing veteran backup Josh Andrews, per his agent, Brett Tessler.

Andrews has spent the last two seasons serving as a backup interior lineman for the Indianapolis Colts. Over that time, he appeared in nine games playing just 97 offensive snaps without making a start.

Before joining the Colts, Andrews spent a few years with Douglas on the Philadelphia Eagles. Originally an undrafted free agent back in 2014, Andrews signed on with the Eagles where he would spend time split between the practice squad and the active roster.

He played in a career-high 13 games in 2015 but despite 25 career appearances, he’s yet to start a game in the NFL. In 2018, Andrews received a below-average grade of 57.6 from Pro Football Focus, albeit in limited playing time.

This is a depth signing — nothing more, nothing less.

Given their history together in Philadelphia, there’s clearly a sense of familiarity between Douglas and Andrews. He isn’t going to be competing for any starting jobs come training camp, but he could be quality depth.

After seeing both Tom Compton and Brent Qvale sign elsewhere in free agency, the Jets were in need of some added offensive line depth. Andrews could be just that and be the Compton replacement the team was looking for.

It’s not a glorious role nor is it an exciting signing, but it does further demonstrate Douglas’ commitment to rebuilding the offensive line.

The Jets have made three external signings this offseason — all three of those players are offensive linemen. Say what you want about the quality of the players Douglas is signing, he’s doing his best to ensure that most of last season’s atrocious offensive line is turned over.

Andrews will likely compete for the backup center and guard spots while serving as versatile depth at both positions.

The offensive line rebuild continues and Josh Andrews is just the latest addition.
