The New York Jets simply can’t catch a break when it comes to their quarterback situation. Quarterback Geno Smith will officially miss 6-10 weeks due to a broken jaw injury due to a locker room incident. The player that “sucker punched” Smith was linebacker IK Enemkpali who has officially been released by the Jets. Here is the breaking news tweet from Rich Cimini of ESPN:

Breaking: Geno Smith out 6-10 weeks with broken jaw, per Bowles. He was “sucker-punched” by LB IK Enemkpali this AM in locker room. #NYJ

This news couldn’t have come at a worst time as Smith was doing well so far during Jets’ training camp. He has been working hard to solidify himself as as the starting quarterback heading into the regular season but now will be pushed back due to this unfortunate incident. Head coach Todd Bowles had this to say to the media, once again, from Cimini at ESPN:

Geno Smith will have surgery, per Bowles. Enemkpali released by team. Bowles just made stunning announcement in briefing w/ press. #NYJ — Rich Cimini (@RichCimini) August 11, 2015

Now with surgery needing to happen, there is no real turntable for his return to the team and be ready to resume regular football activities. Backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick will more than likely be the “next player up” in the aftermath of everything.

Since Fitzpatrick is familiar with the spread offense being installed by new offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, he shouldn’t miss a beat as for now, will be thrown into the starting team reps and be prepared to run the ship heading into the regular season.
