The New York Jets have signed fullback J.C. Copeland to help not only bolster their pass protection but also see if he has what it takes to emerge as a key contributor on offense come next season. At 5’11” and 260 pounds, the Jets are hoping his size will translate to key blocks when it comes to their running game and much more.

Copeland was a star at LSU where he was a consistent starter and considered by many to be one of the best blocking fullbacks in the nation during his tenure there. In his collegiate career, he contributed 92 yards on 36 carries for seven touchdowns.

One area that Copeland excels on in addition to his solid blocking skills is his ability to convert 3rd and short situations. He also has a knack for punching in touchdowns on 1st and goal situations as well, especially in close-yardage plays where his team needs just a few yards to seal the drive with a score.

It’s no secret that the Jets are in the midst of rebuilding their team back to better days ahead. With a revamped receiving corps, defensive secondary and upgrades at literally every key weakness on the team from last year, they are poised to really push the envelope next season and beyond.

New offensive coordinator Chan Gailey will most likely bring a balanced attack to the Jets’ offensive playbook. He’s been known to utilize fullbacks as a last line of defense to incoming pass rushers and also set them up to contribute to the running game.

It’ll be interesting to see what Copeland brings to the table this summer as he battles it out with Tommy Bohanon for the starting spot.
