If the New York Jets do indeed trade Muhammad Wilkerson, the team that acquires him will have to pay the piper.

According to insider Jason La Canfora, the Jets would consider trading Muhammad Wilkerson, but they want multiple first round picks back.  The speculation on this accelerated last night, following the selection of Leonard Williams.  Muhammad Wilkerson has been absent from workouts so far, though they are voluntary, but is looking for the big pay day.  Mike Maccagnan said the Jets aren’t actively shopping Wilkerson, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t listening if someone comes knocking.

If this is truly the price tag, Jets fans should be happy.  Despite the contract dispute, the Jets understand how important Wilkerson is to the franchise.  Wilkerson, to put it simply, is arguably the Jets best player.  It will take a lot to get rid of him.

It puts the Jets in a great spot.  If they hang on to Wilkerson, we can all be thrilled that the new regime understands his value.  If they get a package like the one described, and they trade Wilkerson, it will be tough to argue.  The trade will be from a position of strength, and give the Jets the opportunity to select multiple talented players in the future.
