Report: John Idzik Out, Rex Ryan’s Fate to be Determined by Next General Manager

As far as rumors go, this is one that I hadn’t thought of, but makes the most sense.

According to a published report by Chris Mortensen, the New York Jets are set to fire John Idzik, and Woody Johnson is going to allow the new general manager to decide the fate of Rex Ryan. The source indicates that Woody Johnson is still too “fond” of Rex Ryan, and would be more comfortable with allowing the new general manager to make the decision.

It’s not impossible, however, that Rex Ryan will compel Woody Johnson to make a decision, and remove Ryan from a situation where his stats is in limbo.

This actually makes the most sense. If they want to get rid of John Idzik, just go ahead and do it on Black Monday. Then, find a general manager, and let them pick their own coach. Don’t summarily fire Rex Ryan, tell the potential candidates that the decision is completely up to them. If they think that Rex Ryan is their guy, it makes a great deal of sense to allow them the chance to hire Ryan. If not, it can be their decision to move on.

We will know much more 24 hours from now.
