New York Jets sign DE Jason Babin

In an interesting bit of news out of New York today the Jets have signed former Jaguars defensive end Jason Babin. Babin has bounced around the league for most of his 9 year career to date, initially drafted by the Texans in the first round of the 2004 draft, and having stints with the Titans, Chiefs, Seahawks and twice with the Eagles before landing in Jacksonville last season. Although he has had a few very productive seasons, most notable in 2010 and 2011 when he yielded 30.5 sacks between the two years, at the age of 34 he is in the twilight of his career.
The 34 year old journey man will be joining a defensive front that is one of the strongest in the league. Babin will provide quality depth and experience at the defensive end position and will likely have good opportunities to find playing time as Rex likes to rotate D lineman to keep them fresh. Babin might also find a role as a situational rushing outside linebacker seeing as he has traditionally rushed from outside the tackle. The Jets signed Babin to a two year deal with the second year being a team option, the financial details of the signing have yet to be released.

The New York Jets kick off training camp today with players showing up to SUNY Cortland. TE Jeff Cumberland was excused today for personal reasons, Antwan Barnes and Willie Colon have been put on the PUP list (Barnes being placed on the PUP might explain why the Jets went out and signed Jason Babin). To make room for Babin the Jets have released cornerback Lowell Rose.
