Tonight, as we continue to profile potential Jets’ draftees, we move to the quarterback position. We all know the Jets are going to target QB’s, probably in the middle rounds. One name that has turned up in connection with the Jets, and when asked, picked the Jets as one of the teams likely to choose him, is who we are going to take a look at. Tonight we look at Florida State Seminoles’ quarterback EJ Manuel.
EJ measured in at 6’5″, 235 pounds. He ran a 4.65 forty yard dash, to lead the combine at the position.
Here are his stats while at Florida State:

Here is video on EJ Manuel from a game against Clemson:
PROS: EJ has quite the strong arm, this is without doubt. He can make all of the throws that he needs to make, and throws a pretty tight spiral when doing so. He has quick feet, which he is quite effective at using to get out of trouble. I like his ball handling skills on the play fake as well.
CONS: When EJ steps into his throws they look great. The trouble is, he doesn’t step into them all of the time. His mechanics are not consistent. He throws with a hard step forward sometimes, he is flat footed at other times, and off his back foot at others. He can get away with it in college, but in the NFL it just won’t happen. He also has a “con” that nobody who reads my stuff will be surprised about. You all know by now, how I feel about read option quarterbacks. Until I see more success I still find it to be a gimmick and not an NFL style of play. I like my quarterbacks to be standard, drop back quarterbacks. Maybe I will learn, we shall see.
I think EJ Manuel could be a good quarterback for the New York Jets, with some conditions. He is worth a look in the 3rd round-ish, but David Lee needs to be able to work with him. He needs to be able to rectify EJ’s inconsistencies. If he is, Manuel could potentially have a great future.
