Well, if the story coming out tonight is true, the Jets did one better than tendering Josh Mauga. They re-signed him instead.
Per his agent, Michael Hoffman, the Jets have signed restricted free agent linebacker Josh Mauga to a one year deal, likely for the veteran minimum. After cutting veteran linebacker Bart Scott, the Jets needed to begin bringing depth to the linebacker position, and they have done so but re-signing Mauga.
The 25 year old linebacker has spent most of his three years with the team as a backup and special teams player. In 2011 he recorded 25 tackles in a backup role. He missed most of 2012 with a torn pectoral muscle.
With the release of aging linebackers Bart Scott, as mentioned before, and Calvin Pace, the Jets are going to be playing the young players at linebacker. Figure that Mauga, if healthy, will move up the depth chart, being a part of the system for more than 3 years now. He should get at least the OPPORTUNITY to step up and be a leader.
He should do well, as when he has gotten the chance to play he has performed well.
