Wait a minute, not so fast.

Just a few days ago, our buddy Jake Steinberg noted from a source, as we reported here, that the Jets were reaching out to Mark Sanchez to discuss the possibility of restructuring his 2013 contract.  The theory obviously is to lessen the impact of Mark’s contract on the 2013 salary cap.

Now, we have a report to the contrary.  Dennis Agapito of JetNation is reporting that the Jets have not talked to Mark about restructuring his deal.  The source on this one, per Dennis, is Mark’s agent, and his brother Nick, per the following text exchange:

Source: Is it true that the Jets have reached out to Mark Sanchez to explore restructuring his contractNick Sanchez: No

Truth be told, if we are not in the war room at Florham Park, we don’t know exactly what has gone on here. Could Jake’s source have jumped the gun, saying they already reached out when they were only trying to? Maybe. Could Mark’s brother be denying the story just to get the story to go away? Also maybe. It could be a little bit of everything. Our very own JETSerious had a great point about the ability to falsify a text:

Regardless of whether @Steiny31’s report is accurate or not let’s keep things in perspective: the text message on @JetNation’s site is very easy to recreate. All you have to do is change your friends name in your contacts to “Nick Sanchez” and tell him to reply “no”. Then, you take a screenshot. Still, though, the text could be legit.

It would be in the best interest of the team for Mark to restructure if he is willing, so it still wouldn’t surprise me if they do reach out to him. Or, if they already have.
