The coaching carousel is continuing to turn, and it looks like Nick Mangold and company will have a new man leading them.
The New York Daily News is reporting this afternoon that offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo has been fired by the Jets, after one year with the team. The report has the Jets replacing “Gugs” with Mike Devlin, currently the tight ends coach.
Dave did some good things, and some bad things. On the positive side, he did groom Austin Howard into a decent NFL starter at right tackle. The position is no longer a position of priority to upgrade. On the negative side, he did have some talent evaluation issues. Remember when he told us how great Wayne Hunter was? Enough said. He also was a pretty nasty guy, who was quite rude to the media the one time he had to meet with them, per league requirements.
It is an interesting move, as the running game really started to get the new blocking scheme down toward the end of the season. My guess would be that Devlin will run a similar system as to not impede their progress. We will find out.
