Jets to trade for Steve Smith?

ESPN NY Rich Cimini proposed a plan for the New York Jets in his most recent column: Get Steve Smith.

Word out of Carolina is that the Panthers WR has demanded a trade. No word on whether the teams drafting of QB Cam Newton was the reason.

Cimini proposes that if the Jets were to lose either Santonio Holmes or Braylon Edwards to free agency, then a trade for the disgruntled/expensive/talented WR should be investigated.

Yes, we know that in 2008, Smith was at the top of his game with 1,421 yards, but he is 32 years old and comes with about $14.75 million remaining on his contract.  With that figure, it’s not apparent how the Jets can fit in Edwards and Smith or Holmes and Smith, the latter of which would provide a very small WR corps for QB Mark Sanchez.

Not sure Smith is a good fit here.   Already tight under the cap, it’s not clear who the Jets can even trade to get Smith, aside from draft picks.
