Jets Leonhard out for Monday

By Marc A. Greenberg

New York Jets starting safety Jim Leonhard collided with WR Patrick Turner today in practice and was taken off the field with a “severe” shin injury, according to coach Rex Ryan.

Leonhard’s will miss Monday’s game in New England.

With injuries being part of the game, a team has to expect them during the season.  Injuries occurring during practice, however, are tough to handle.

“I don’t know the extent of the injury, obviously he’ll be out this week,” Ryan said. “Obviously that’s a huge blow to us. We’re built, we’re about the team. He’s a huge part of what we do. Kind of a freak thing, two guys were competing for the ball. There was a little bit of a collision but clearly there was an injury.”

“I’m assuming there was (a break) but I don’t know,” Ryan added.

Tough blow here for the Jets who, will not only have to rely on Brodney Pool and Eric Smith for Safety work, but probably Rookie Kyle Wilson on punt returns.
