Score another award for the New York Jets.
A week after Mark Sanchez was named AFC Player of the Week, now it’s Brad Smith’s turn. Smith, who returned a kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown against the Bengals last week, was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week.
Amassing 200 all-purpose yards in the Jets’ 26-10 win against Cincinnati, including an end-around run of 53 yards for a TD, Smith became the fourth player in NFL history to score on a rushing play of 50-plus yards and a kickoff return in the same game.
Smith leads the league in kick return average, picking up 29.2 yards per return.
“He better go to the Pro Bowl this year as a special teams player,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said.
Smith was previously named Player of the Week in Week 16 of the 2009 season.
