Our owner never has met a camera he didn’t like, has he? Don’t get me wrong, it’s Woody Johnson’s football team and has the right to do whatever he wants. It just seems that what he wants to do is talk. And talk. And talk.

In the “Hard Knocks” show, we heard quite a bit from Mr. Johnson. He talked a lot about his experience with contracts, in relation to the Revis situation at the time. Nothing too bad there, but when you put it with everything else…oh boy. Remember how he was the one who wanted a second crack at “Hard Knocks”, even though nobody else did? He made it clear that was just what he wanted.

What about the political appearances? Again, if he wants to throw his support to Mitt Romney, or anyone else, go ahead and do it. But don’t go out and say that, and continue by diminishing the importance of your football team. Fans are not going to take it well when you say you would rather see Mitt Romney win than the New York Jets. Just not smart.

Like I said, Woody Johnson opens his mouth, and then it gets ugly.

And then we had his affinity for a certain backup quarterback that I am not going to say the name above. His name makes me twitch so I need to avoid saying it at all costs. But when he was here, Woody Johnson had no problem talking him up. He had that now famous quote about “never having too much” of him. For all of his faults, it was quite noble of Mike Tannenbaum to take responsibility for the situation, but I don’t think anyone believed him.

We know that the owner wants PSLs to sell, and his comments belie anything Mike tried to do there.

Now, after hearing from Woody yet again yesterday, I have come to the conclusion that he should either wear a muzzle, or at the very least, hire a speech writer.

He was talking yesterday about the current Mike Goodson situation. You know the particulars by now, he was arrested on Friday morning on drug and weapons charges, including the carrying of hollow point bullets. There has been a lot of debate on how the Jets should handle it including on this website. However, we learned from a team statement that they were going to let the legal process play out, and make a decision at that point.

That would have been just fine, provided that was all. But, Woody found a microphone again.

Yesterday, he talked about being on a “fact-finding” mission with regards to the Goodson case. Look at what Mr. Johnson had to say after:

We’re trying to win games and do the right thing,” Jets owner Woody Johnson told reporters. “Truth, justice and the American way. We live by it, we really do. We have a strong credo, very proud people, very intelligent people that work in our building. We want to avoid the avoidable and I think we do a good job.”

Does Woody have a rule that if he is going to talk about the team, he has to sound ridiculous? “Truth, justice and the American way”? Excuse me, this is not the justice league, this is football. This one wasn’t a controversial statement or anything, it was just weird. Time and time again, Woody Johnson makes it clear that he doesn’t know how to handle the public questions.

Therefore, it’s time for Woody to stay away from the mics. Make your thoughts heard through team statements, where the PR department can edit them for you. If not, at least have Bruce (PR director) write what you are going to say. You have to get sick of opening your mouth and tasting your foot, don’t you?

This week is the annual NFL employment symposium, held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The purpose of the get-together is to prepare minority candidates for employment in the league, as far up the ranks as head coach.

Representatives from all of the teams are there, and the Jets are no different. Woody Johnson has been in attendance, and spoke out for the first time yesterday, since the release of Tim Tebow. He had a message for Jets fans:

“That’s absolutely perfect, be patient, be patient, have trust that we’re doing the right thing for your team, we’re trying to do the right thing for your team,” Johnson said at the NFL career development symposium in Philadelphia yesterday. “That’s why John was brought in and the other coaching changes were made; to make us more competitive.”

He continued along this path when talking about the draft:

“You gotta have some faith that these decisions will pan out, the draft is going to work. I’m very confident the draft we had was a good one, we stuck to what we believed in and the way we set things up.”

What about Rex? Does the new tact of patience mean we are going to see Rex past 2013? Will the team consider extending him during the season if the team is starting to improve?

“I would never talk about contracts or anything like that,” Johnson said. “We normally don’t discuss contracts or extensions or anything like that.”

Though Tebow is gone, he expects Mark to be here in camp to compete, as he is “under contract”. For what it’s worth, Woody has adapted the John Idzik mantra:

“Competition makes you better,” Johnson said.

No surprise that he won’t talk about the Rex Ryan issue. He never talks contracts, and there are a lot of things you can say about him, but Woody has been consistent here. Don’t read anything into it.

He’s right, we are going to have to be patient. A lot of these moves will take time to develop. Obviously, losing Darrelle in return for a rookie, for example, does make the defense weaker, at least temporarily.

But we are on the right track, ladies and gentlemen. Give John Idzik and his team time. It will get better.

The Darrelle Revis situation is one that continues to be on everyone’s lips, and for good reason. It’s not often that an NFL roster has the top player in the game, and yet has good reason to trade that player. The Jets are in a unique position in that regard. The Jets have a legitimate legend on their roster, who may very well not be on that roster in the next few weeks. Where will he go? Will he go anywhere? The discussion will not go away until there is a resolution, one way or another.

Not surprisingly, this topic was one on everybody’s lips at the annual NFL meetings in Phoenix. Woody said he would “love” to have Darrelle back, but if an offer came in that would better the New York Jets, he would have to listen:

“It’s not one player,” Johnson said from the NFL Annual Meeting in Phoenix, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport. “If you don’t look at the whole 53, you’re not going to make it. If somebody wants to make an offer to one of our players, you have to listen.”

John Idzik continued a similar party line stating, “I expect Revis to be a member of the New York Jets.”

This is going to make a lot of headlines over the next few days, we all know it. The mainstream media is going to generate headlines such as, “Woody Wants to Trade Darrelle”, “Woody Wants Darrelle to go Bye-Bye”, “Idzik Doesn’t Want Darrelle”, and others. You will have already seen them before you read this post, and you probably will continue as the week moves ahead.

Fans, don’t pay any attention, please. The headlines are nonsense. Why? Because the statements made are OBVIOUS.

Even before John Idzik arrived in town, there were reports that the Jets would have to consider trading Darrelle Revis. After John’s arrival, the rumors didn’t go away. Was there a steady stream of rumors, the way they came out when Tanny was here? Of course not. But, despite Rex Ryan’s protests to the contrary, the rumors were there. But, the Jets haven’t jumped to make a trade. What does that tell us? That they want to trade Darrelle, but only if the price is right.

Doesn’t that sound just like the statements we just heard? It does to me.

My point is, we already knew that this is how the Jets brass felt. Whether they are sick of Darrelle and his complaining about his contract or not, we know that the trade is a consideration. We know that they like Darrelle as a player, but would trade him if it helps.

These statements from the meetings only reiterate what we already knew. Don’t let the mainstream media get you swept up by these quotes. You already knew them to be true.
