NFL Writer Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post is very honest with his opinions. If you follow him on Twitter(@HubbuchNYP), you have the opportunity to read his unique take on a daily basis. Bart has been gracious enough to take time out of his busy schedule to share his opinions regarding the Jets with us:

THE JETPRESS-I want to start with your opinion of Mark Sanchez. Although his numbers have improved every year, he gets a lot of criticism, some valid, some not. His decision making does leave something to be desired at times, as we saw last year. Can he be the guy the franchise quarterback that the Jets need?

BART HUBBACH-I highly doubt Sanchez will ever be a true “franchise” quarterback, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be the long-term answer for the Jets. I’m sorry, but you don’t win four road playoff games — two of them against Tom Brady and Peyton Manning — and go to back-to-back conference title games by accident. Sanchez has the potential to be a reliable, productive, winning starter, but it’s up to the Jets to surround him with a capable supporting cast. They didn’t do that last year and seemingly haven’t done it again this year, while at the same time compounding the problem by bringing in Tim Tebow. How is Sanchez supposed to gain confidence (admittedly a problem for him) and develop fully in light of those two factors? Beats me.

TJP-From what you have seen so far, in your visits to Cortland, is Mark taking the steps to be that leader for the Jets?

BH-Still too early to tell. He’s saying a lot of the right things, but the proof won’t come until the games count.

TJP-What is your opinion about how the Jets have handled Mark over his first three years?

BH-Bi-polar, to be honest. They coddle him on one hand, then bring in the Tebow circus on the other. It’s as if they got too caught up in the over-the-top criticism of Sanchez last season — much of which I thought was unfair, considering his awful supporting cast — and decided to all but give up on him after one bad year despite the success of the previous two. I can’t figure it out. I have no idea now how the Jets truly feel about him.

Woody Johnson is an interesting guy, is he not? He clearly likes attention. He has done some great things for this football team, no doubt, but he never met attention that he didn’t like.

However, is he really as clueless as he shows himself to be sometimes? Take a look at what he had to say when commenting about the level of media coverage surrounding Tim Tebow:

“I think the enormity of the coverage kind of suprised me a little bit,” Johnson said.

Yes, this was the first practice that Mr. Johnson has attended so far during camp, but that doesn’t matter. Doesn’t he read a newspaper every now and again? His backup QB was the biggest story in the sport in Denver, Colorado for pete’s sake! Come on Woody, you can’t be this naive. Maybe he is:

“I knew there would be press, there would be interest, but even by our standards this is pretty amazing,” Johnson said.

Interesting, when you go back to the offseason and refer to what Mike Tannenbaum had to say:

“We knew what we were getting ourselves into.”

So, did Woody not listen to his GM? Is he clueless? Or is it what I have said in the past? That Woody Johnson knows exactly what he is doing, and what that is, is trying to gain the most attention to his team.

Look at this other quote from Woody Johnson on Tuesday:

“We’re in a media business,” said Johnson. “We want to give our fans an insight.”

Seriously? I thought the Jets were in the football business. That could be one of the dumbest things I have ever heard.

Is he clueless? Draw your own conclusions.

Good afternoon Jets fans. Here are some thoughts and observations from what is turning into a very feisty New York Jets training camp:

Rex Ryan is doing a good job taking more of an active role as the leader of these men. Fights are occurring a lot. Yes, they are normal. But I still have no problem with Rex getting annoyed. He has to make sure that this team doesn’t stop caring for one another. There is a difference between emotion, and problems, and coach has to make sure they don’t cross it. Good job.

Now back to football news. Aaron Maybin is continuing to impress. 2 more sacks today. He basically has been unblockable, and it will be great to see this translate into a game.

Greg McElroy had a good day from the third quarterback position, throwing for 2 TDs during team drills.

Apparently, nobody can cover Josh Baker so far in camp either. He caught another pair of TDs, one from McElroy, and one from Tebow. His play on Friday night should be fun to watch as well.

Darrelle Revis had some tightness in the hamstring most likely, as he didn’t take part in all reps today. Hopefully the Jets will be cautious.
