Could it possibly be some good news on the injury front for the New York Jets? The answer is potentially yes.

Rex Ryan, in his morning press conference at Florham Park today, announced that WR Chaz Schilens is out for Sunday’s game against Carolina. It’s hard to believe he will be able to make the team being out for so long.

Now, for the potentially good news. Rex also said that he is hopeful that Santonio Holmes and Jeremy Kerley “have a shot” to play on Sunday night. This could be huge news for the New York Jets. As we all know, it’s been tough sledding for the Jets offense so far, in part because no wide receivers have been available. With Sunday as the final real dress rehearsal for the first team, if they can get some guys back it would be great.

I know it is only the second preseason game. The Jets have time to get better, with the big dress rehearsal coming next week against the Carolina Panthers.

Also, I know that Rex Ryan has stopped with the Super Bowl guarantees. However, is being too positive about his team and players? Take a look at some of his quotes from last night after the game. First, here is what he had to say about Wayne Hunter:

I don’t know exactly what the number was (sacks allowed), but he’s going against a good football player in (Jason) Pierre-Paul. He’s a heck of a football player. If you’re isolated one-on-one, he’s not just going to beat Wayne Hunter. He’s going to beat a bunch of tackles in this league. Clearly, we have to be mindful of that. I thought he was able to do some good things, but I want to watch the tape before I isolate one guy. I have a tough time believing it was one guy.

First of all, what game was Rex watching? Wayne was able to do some good things? Yes, Rex, you are right. His uniform stayed on. That was a good thing. His helmet fit, also a positive. He didn’t get injured while watching from the sidelines. Other than that, I am not sure what coach was talking about.

At least Wayne Hunter is aware he isn’t doing a good job.

We all saw the performance that Hunter turned in last night against the Giants. Heck, the NJ police could have picked him up for attempted assault on Mark Sanchez, allowing four sacks, one called back on a penalty. Here is what he had to say about whether or not his starting job is on the line:

It has always been on the line. I have to perform or they will find someone else who is better. My main focus is to watch the tape and seeing if I can get better.

He also, to his credit, acknowledged that there are lots of things he needs to get better at:

There are a lot of things I can work on. There are a lot of things I need to work on. It was a good first live action for me.

The good thing is that Wayne Hunter acknowledged the fact that he isn’t performing. He did mention the fact that the Giants have a good front, and that is true. He didn’t try to blame that as the only factor in his poor performance. Many athletes don’t take accountability, so that is a good sign.

The bad sign is that Hunter said he is going to see “if” he can get better. He should be more confident in his ability and say something like, “don’t worry, I will get better”. It doesn’t give the Jets fans a lot of confidence to hear him say if he will get better.

Not like we have much confidence in him as it is.
