Well folks; we’re coming at the half way point in the season and it’s Dolphins week. What’s the weather going to be? According to weather.gov; it’s going to be A chance of rain. Cloudy, with a high near 63. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible as Hurricane Sandy makes his way up the coast. It will be windy at Met Life Stadium coming in from the NE at 16 MPH.

So, who does the weather favor? Because this game is being played in Jersey, this game favors the Jets because playing in sloppy weather is an north-eastern staple.

HOWEVER, this track will be sloppy so this Jets defense will need to find its footing early. This defense needs to be able to stop the run and get to pretty boy Ryan Tannehill. Yes, I said it. Back up the talk and hold Reggie Bush to under 100 yards rushing.

Then offensively, the Jets need to play a lot of ball control if this weather is going to be as bad as they think. And Mark Sanchez needs to be the good Mark Sanchez. The one making the smart decisions and the one who fits balls in a tight window. The offensive line needs to show up and make the holes for the running game (Shonn Greene, cough cough).

The Jets had better not look past Sunday, because as we have seen before, it’s going to be tough. Speed rushers have given the Jets fits in the past. Darren McFadden last year, and CJ Spiller this year. This week, the Jets face just that type of running back when they face the Dolphins on Sunday, when they go up against Reggie Bush. He had a huge game last week, and is primed to have another one if the Jets aren’t ready for him.

Earlier this week, our guy JETSerious took a look at Reggie Bush in his Star Spotlight. Take a look at it if you haven’t, he takes a great look at the past and present Reggie Bush. He specifically takes a look at the fact, in order to stop Bush, the Jets need to set the edge on defense. JETSerious hits it right on the money here. Today, let’s take that a bit further, by looking at some screen shots, courtesy of the All-22 Coaches video.

What you are going to see is how the Jets not only need to set the edge, they need to set the backside edge. What does that mean?

Well, the Dolphins like to run a lot of mis-direction plays on the ground. That means that the line blocks down in one direction, drawing the defense in that direction. The back, instead of following that flow, goes the opposite direction, running off the back side of the defense, where there are less players due to the mis-direction.

For example, here is the first play from scrimmage last week for the Dolphins.

See how the offensive line is blocking, for the most part, their right, the left hand side of the screen? That draws the defense by instinct towards the blockers, because instincts say that the runner is going to go towards the flow of the blocking. But, take a look at the path Bush takes.

Instead of following the flow of the blockers, he cuts into a lane going the opposite way, towards the right side of the screen. Notice how due to the blocking, there are less defenders to that side. The result? 11 yards and a first down for Bush.

On the next page, we are going to take a look at a touchdown run by Bush from the third quarter.

Week 3 is upon us and the weather report for Miami, according to weather.com, when the Jets kick off will be a high of 84 degrees with scattered thunderstorms and a 40% chance of rain. The wind will come in from the east/north east at eight miles per hour, and the humidity will be at 78%.

Coming into the weekend, it’s been raining down in Florida. That field at Sun Life Stadium is a mess when wet.

So, who does the wet weather favor on Sunday?

Normally, I’d say that this would favor the home team because of the home field and the Dolphins would be used to the track of their stadium…

However, the wet conditions would favor the Jets. When you’re an northeast team, you basically play in all kinds of weather conditions — snow, rain, heat, cold… you name it. Dolphins rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill played his college ball at Texas A&M. Last I checked, you don’t get a lot of rain and the schedule they keep don’t necessarily take them to the northeast.

The Jets have played in all types of weather conditions and Mark Sanchez is more used to throwing the ball in the rain. But in this game, the fish will see a heavy dose of Shonn Greene, and I would think Tim Tebow as a running back. Wet weather would favor more of a ball control game and that plays right into the Jets hands. The front four on defense need to be able to tackle and control Reggie Bush. As long as they do that, you can make the Dolphins one dimensional and make this a relatively easy day for Gang Green.
