Mock draft season continues, ladies and gentlemen.

Todd McShay is another one of the prominent draft insiders from ESPN. Up to, and during the draft, you will see McShay go toe to toe with Mel Kiper, proving his expert analysis regarding all things draft related.

Todd, just like everybody else on the dial, has published, and has been updating his mock draft. Everybody has their “version” of who is going to be taken on April 25th. McShay’s mock is part of ESPN’s “Insider” program, so you have to be a member in order to read the whole draft. So, we will bring you the New York Jets pick and his rationalization.

So, with the 9th pick, McShay brings to the New York Jets………….

BARKEVIOUS MINGO, DE, LSU

I have no problem with Mingo as a top-10 pick. His lack of sack production is being overemphasized, as he often faced extra attention from double-teams. In multiple games I saw on tape, he was limited in a gap-discipline game plan to limit mobile quarterbacks. Yes, he needs to get bigger and stronger to hold up better against the run. He also needs to improve his speed-to-power rush, but he is an explosive pass-rusher already, and his motor is always running. He is athletic enough to occasionally drop into coverage, but he will get paid to get after the QB. That’s exactly what the Jets need on defense.

PROS: The first thing you notice on the tape is blazing speed. 40 yard dash speed is not always an indicator of much, but in Mingo’s case, you see it in his first step off of the line. When he gets a beat on his defender, he is gone. The lineman has no chance to stop Mingo once Mingo gets going. His closing speed is a thing of beauty. Look at that tape. When the QB is in his cross-hairs, it’s over for that QB. He also stays well with running backs out in coverage as well. He moves quite well in that regard, very fluid.

CONS: He needs to add some bulk to his lean frame. You see it when he gets into a battle with an offensive lineman that he can’t use his speed on. If Barkevious is not able to get that first step, and the lineman gets his hands on him, he has a lot of trouble. He can’t pull away, and the lineman can use turn Mingo’s raw speed against him to take him out of the play.

The bottom line on Mingo is that he has a lot of potential. He could potentially be a beast in the Rex Ryan defense. He does need a bit more bulk in order to be able to be as big of a force in the running game as he is in the passing game. However, his main job to begin his career will be to get after the QB, and Mingo can do that.

The Jets could do a lot worse than this pick.

Mel Kiper really needs no introduction. Is there a face that is more recognizable when talking about the NFL draft, especially with ESPN? I don’t think there is. For years, his face is about the only one you would see talking NFL draft.

Well, Mel has published the third version of his mock draft. Remember a while ago, I talked about how the mock drafts seem to fall in line with each other, as the draft approaches? Well, Mel’s third draft falls right in line with his colleague at ESPN, Todd McShay. For the Jets, he has selected………….

BARKEVIOUS MINGO, OLB, LSU

It’s about time the Jets found an athletic difference-maker on the edge for Rex Ryan. The interior of the defensive line should be a strength with Muhammad Wilkerson and Quinton Coples, but they need edge speed. Mingo is a freak athlete, and could become a star with the right coaching.

We have reviewed his stats in the past, and he clearly has the production of a guy that can make an impact at the NFL level. A 4.58 forty yard dash is straight line speed, but that does translate, when you watch him, to a quick first step. He gets that first step on the lineman and he is gone. He does need to improve with his hands though. When the tackle gets his hands up on Barkevious, he sometimes has a hard time making a move.

Feel free to take a look at his full draft profile from NFL Mocks by clicking here.

It’s a Barkevious Mingo Sunday at the J-E-T Press. We took a look this morning at Todd McShay’s latest mock draft, where Mingo was the choice for the Jets. Todd’s draft is far from the only one that chooses Mingo for the Jets, as he is one of the guys targeted for the Jets with the 9th pick.

So, as promised, we are going to take more of a detailed look at Mingo. What do we like about this guy? What can he improve on? Let’s talk about it.

MEASUREABLES

He measures in at 6’4″, 241 pounds. He led the way at the NFL Combine with a 40 yard dash of 4.58 seconds, a 37 inch vertical jump, a 128 inch broad jump, and a 3 cone drill of 6.84 seconds.

Here are his stats while at LSU, once again:

Barkevious was quite the productive player for LSU, especially in 2011. Let’s take a look at some video:

Barkevious Mingo has all the potential to be an absolute beast. We have said it many times, how Rex Ryan would be licking his chops at the idea of having a dominant pass rush off the edge to add to his defense. Mingo can improve on some things, but he has a lot of talent. The Jets can do a lot worse than picking this guy at number 9.
