JETSerious will bring you inside the defensive film room and dissect plays from the beginning to end…. each and every week. We’ll look at what the Jets defense did right and wrong for each play.

The Jets traveled to Tennessee this past Monday, and put together a great defensive effort. The defense carried the offense, but in the end, the Titans were able get the victory. Mark Sanchez had 5 turnovers, leaving the Jets defense in a terrible spot.

Regardless of the loss, let’s take a look at what the Jets D did good and bad on Sunday.

Enjoy!

Right after the lead-changing touchdown pass to Jeff Cumberland, the Titans drove down the field and responded with a 14 yard touchdown run by Jake Locker.

The Titans essentially had an extra blocker on this play. Normally, Chris Johnson would be the ball carrier with 9 blockers and Jake Locker carrying out the fake. But with Locker keeping it, he is able to run behind 10 blockers, and Chris Johnson becomes his lead blocker.

Jake Locker is highlighted in yellow. He runs a sweep to the left, similar to the touchdown run by Colin Kaepernick in the 49ers win at Metlife Stadium.

The left guard pulls left, with the other Titans picking up the remaining defenders.

With 4 lead blockers for each of the 4 Jet defenders, the Jets defense doesn’t have much of a chance to stop this play.

The left guard is able to lay a hat on Yeremiah Bell. Chris Johnson gets a seal on the other side on Ellis Lankster, creating a nice lane for Locker.

LaRon Landry is the last defender at about the 5 yard line.

But with the seal on Bell, it’s difficult for Landry to get in position to make a tackle.

This was a tough one to swallow, because this play was executed to perfection… and identical to the run by Kaepernick.

The Titans stole this one out of the 49ers playbook, but who could blame them.

It worked didn’t it?

Well now that we’ve got the bad out of the way, let’s take a look at the good.

Please turn the page and join us as we break down a defensive turnover from Sunday’s Jets vs. Titans matchup…

Even though we are mathematically out of the playoffs, we are still going to look back at the film. It wasn’t pretty, but we are going to look at it anyway. This afternoon, JETSerious will take a look at the defensive film, but now, it’s time to look at the offensive film. It was pretty “offensive” to tell you the truth.

What we are going to do this morning, is take a look at a couple of plays from our now former starting quarterback, Mark Sanchez. There has been a lot of talk about what has gone wrong with this guy. After the game, Braylon Edwards said it best when he said that Mark “needs to have more confidence in himself”. That hits the nail on the head. His confidence is gone. He has so little confidence in himself, that he doesn’t read what he sees in front of him anymore. He mis-reads the coverages, and that sets him up to get intercepted. Today, we are going to take a look at two of the INTs from Monday night to illustrate what I mean, both from the forth quarter. On both of these plays, Mark had difficulty reading the single high safety. Let me show you what I mean. First we are going to look at the pick intended for Braylon Edwards:

Braylon Edwards is split wide to the right. As you look at the formation, it would appear that Mark has one-on-one coverage for his old favorite target, Braylon, circled in green. Braylon is going to make his move up the field. But, he will not be one-on-one. Michael Griffin, circled in blue, is the single high safety. Follow him as we move forward.

Mark, circled in green, is doing what he always does, locking in on his wide receiver. He thinks Braylon has single coverage, and wants to give his guy a chance to make a play. He does not see Griffin, again circled in blue. You see how his body is already turned towards Braylon? He is breaking on the football before Mark has even let the ball go. Mark HAS to see that and not make this throw. But, he throws it anyway. What happens?

Griffin closes on the ball quickly……….

And picks off his first of two on the night.

See? We are four years in, and Mark is still having difficulty reading coverage. Turn the page, where Mark does it again when the game is on the line.

With this wonderfully talented Jets roster finally out of the playoff hunt, I thought it fitting to use the picture to the right to begin our report card grades for week 15. Let’s get to it:

QUARTERBACK:F Despite having Braylon Edwards back, Mark Sanchez looked awful once again. 13-28 for 131 yards, 1 TD and 4 INTs was never acceptable, is not acceptable now, and never will be acceptable. It’s year four for this young man, and he still tries to force passes into spots they don’t belong, and makes bad decisions. I am one of the biggest Mark Sanchez defenders going, but his play is just indefensible.

RUNNING BACKS:B+ Very quietly, the running game was actually excellent last night. Overall, the Jets ran the ball at a clip of 4.9 yards per carry. Shonn Greene led the way with 13 carries for 68 yards, but none of them averaged under four yards per carry. The offensive line deserves credit as we’ll talk about in a few minutes, but credit has to go to the guys carrying the rock when they do it at a 4.9 YPC clip. The problem was the fact that Tony Sparano would not stay with it. The game was close, and the Jets were running well, but yet they stopped running. It makes no sense.

WIDE RECEIVERS AND TIGHT ENDS:C+ Braylon Edwards had a decent game in his return, with 3 catches for 47 yards. Jeff Cumberland did record 53 yards and 1 TD, but the early TD that Jeff couldn’t hold onto was huge. No receiver stepped up as a target that took over the football game. They played OK, but nobody became a go-to guy on the night. The receivers were middle of the road.

OFFENSIVE LINE:B The guys up front dominated in the running game. Even though Sparano got away from it too fast, when he WAS using it, it was going well. We have talked in previous posts about how important the offensive line is to the Jets running game, and that showed last night. 4.9 yards per carry is a huge number. Heck, it’s not a huge number, it’s a DOMINANT number. It really makes you wonder why they stopped running. The only reason it’s not an “A” is because Mark Sanchez was sacked four times. Otherwise, the line actually looked really good.
