JETSerious will bring you inside the defensive film room and dissect plays from the beginning to end…. each and every week. We’ll look at what the Jets defense did right and wrong for each play.

The Jets traveled to Jacksonville this past Sunday, and put together a great defensive effort. Right from the start, it appeared as if the Jets had a “bend but don’t break” mentality. The Jaguars were able to move the ball early on, but it was the Jets defense who came away with a turnover down near the goal-line.

We’ll look at the Jags 32 yard TD run by Owens, and analyze what the defense needs to improve on. We’ll also dive into Bart Scott’s interception to see what the defense did well.

Enjoy!

Chad Henne hands off to M. Owens, who takes it 32 yards for a touchdown.

The Jaguars plan to double team two Jets d-lineman. Eric Smith is in red all the way to the left. It’s important for him to maintain outside containment. Similar to the Tebow TD run last season in Denver, Eric Smith fails to contain the outside. Instead of forcing the defender back inside to other Jet defenders, he allows the runner to beat him outside. Unacceptable. Eric Smith needs to execute better when he’s responsible for the outside.

In the next still-shot, you’ll see the two double-teams by Jacksonville. They are circled in black.

If you’re Owens of Jacksonville, you’ve got to love what you see ahead of you.

The picture above shows where Smith goes wrong. It’s hard to see him (he’s getting blocked), but the bottom red arrow is him and he’s going inside. This allows Owens (yellow) to cut back and break for the sidelines.

“Smitty” is going to hear it from Dennis Thurman and co. in the real film room.

The pictures above and below both have red circles. We’re focusing on these four Jets because they’re all guilty of missing a tackle. Everyone got bunched up and no one could get a hold of Owens. The Jets need to improve with gang tackling because, if I’m not mistaken, this type of tangle-up happened before…. when C.J. Spiller broke a run between 2 Jet defenders in week 1 and went for a long touchdown. And against San Francisco, when Manningham took a reverse around the edge for a long gain.

The Jets defense has looked good without Darrelle Revis so far, but there’s certainly room for improvement in tackling.

Now that we’ve got the bad out of the way, and noted that the defense needs to improve in tackling, let’s take a look at the good.

Please turn the page and join us as we break down a defensive turnover from Sunday’s Jets vs. Jaguars matchup…

Yes there was a big signing in Jets land yesterday, Braylon Edwards. But, there was still a game last week, and it’s time to look at the film. The Jets beat the Jaguars by a score of 17-10, and now we look back, starting with the offensive film. Specifically, we are going to look the resurgence of the running game.

During the game, they talked about the running game being like “chopping down a tree”. You have to keep swinging that axe, even though you might not have success right away. If you put the axe away after only a few swings, that tree is not going to come down. But if you keep swinging, eventually the axe comes all the way through, and the tree comes down. It is a great analogy, because the running game can work exactly the same way, and it did. Early in the game, the Jets didn’t see great success on the ground, but they stuck with it. In the second half, the tree came down, and the Jets started breaking off chunks of yardage. This morning, we are going to look at two runs from the third quarter, one by Bilal Powell, and one by Shonn Greene. First, the Bilal Powell run:(scroll down a bit to take a look at the formation)

Powell is lined up straight behind Mark Sanchez. The blocking scheme is interesting. The guards are in the green circles, Slauson in the light green, Brandon Moore in the dark green. These guys are actually going to cris-cross, Slauson coming over to block to the right, and Moore coming over to the left to aid Nick Mangold in sealing off the left side:

Moore and Slauson are still highlighted in the green circles, same as the previous frame. See how they have switched places? Now take a look at the hole they open up:

They open up a huge hole for Powell, and with his speed, Powell takes advantage by hitting it fast. The result?

12 yards later, it’s first and goal New York Jets. The Jets worked and worked, and broke through with a big run. Turn the page and we will take a look at a run from later in the quarter by Shonn Greene, that had a couple of surprises.

The grades are in from yesterday’s 17-10 win over the Jaguars, so let’s get right to them:

QUARTERBACK:C+ The quarterback gets an average grade because he was just that, average. He didn’t do anything to kill the Jets, which is a nice start, but he wasn’t a major factor in the game either. He finished the day 12-19 through the air for 111 yards, no TDs or INTs. He did fumble the ball away once, adding to his turnover troubles. He made a couple of huge throws, including a late 37 yard hookup to Jeff Cumberland. He just wasn’t enough of a factor to garner a higher grade.

RUNNING BACKS:B+ The running game wore the Jaguars down yesterday. It wasn’t looking great in the first half, but to the Jets credit, they stayed with it. They didn’t have a vast change of plans and start throwing the football all over the field the way Schotty might have. Instead, they stayed with the philosophy, and it paid off, as the Jets started breaking off big chunks of yardage in the second half. Shonn Greene had 77 yards and a TD, Bilal Powell added 78 and a TD. The Jets controlled the game on the ground. Excellent job.

WIDE RECEIVERS AND TIGHT ENDS:C+ As with Sanchez, this group didn’t play particularly badly, they just weren’t asked to do very much, leaving the game primarily to the guys on the ground. They were without Dustin Keller and Clyde Gates, and Stephen Hill left the game early with a knee injury. Guys like Chaz Schilens stepped up, as well as Jeff Cumberland with a huge 37 yard reception late. They too, were just not asked to do enough to generate a higher grade than a C+.

OFFENSIVE LINE:B The fattys up front did a nice job in the running attack. They pounded and pounded, and it finally broke loose in the second half, as these guys were opening up huge holes for the backs. For the game, the Jets averaged 4 yards per carry on the ground, and credit goes to the offensive line. It only comes back to a “B” because of 3 sacks being allowed. Otherwise, nice job out of the offensive line.

Turn the page for defense and special teams.
