Is this what they call a case of Deja-Vu? It just might be.

Reports came out during minicamp, including reports from our mainstream beat reporters, that the Jets were working on a “Read-Option” package to feature rookie QB Geno Smith. I have but one question in response, and gets to the depth of the matter, and the real heart of last year’s realization.

That point? It is that installing a two quarterback system because it changes the focus of the offense too much.

First of all, there is the question of communication. Once talking is off the table, it comes down to had judgements. Without strong verbal communications, come down to gestures that are obviously not going to be as effective.

When you are switching from one basic core to another, that amounts to a lot of extra talk that has to take place during that 45 second clock, and how often have coaches been slow with the next play.

This is a lot of work for an offense in general. Changing midstream affects the rhythm of the offense, for both quarterbacks. The starter can’t get into a rhythm if he completes a huge pass and then comes out. The starter can’t get going, and the backup can’t get off the deck either, even if the crowd loves him.

Like it or not, momentum is an issue. Quarterbacks need the opportunity to get into a rhythm, in order for an offense to click on all cylinders. How do you get that going? YOU USE ONE QUARTERBACK. There is an old football saying that says, “When you have two quarterbacks, you have no quarterbacks”. I firmly believe this to be the case, and to HAVE BEEN the case since the beginning of football times.

And go through the times where this has been attempted. Has a two-quarterback system won a title in the NFL, ever? You had Tebow with Denver, that didn’t work. I know, his fans will say it did, but the obvious retort is, “If it worked so well, Why did they let him go?” Why? Because John Elway knows football, and knew that even in the throws of its greatest success, running the “Wildcat” will never work as well as traditional quarterbacking.

Even Kaepernick didn’t start the domination until he was the full-time starter for his team. It was tried in Dallas with Craig Morton. Guess what? Highly uncussessful once again.

My point, to bring it back to the headline, is please don’t force the read-option on Geno Smith. We don’t know how he will run it, and we have seen the core of the team run it.

And don’t yell at me, I still feel this way with or without Tim Tebow.

Previously on “The Geno Smith Project Vol. II“, we touched on Geno Smith’s ability to go through his progressions. We also touched on his arm, and how he can make all the throws. That’s a little general, though.

Now, let’s focus on his accuracy.

Accuracy

Two important throws are important to me in the Jets offense; the slant, and the fade to the corner.

The slant has been a staple for the Jets passing attack for years now, and Santonio Holmes has really taken advantage of the off-coverage nicely over that time span. Jeremy Kerley has also earned recognition for the Jets (limited) success through the air. Kerley will certainly benefit from Geno’s accuracy throwing the slant, or any short pass in that matter. The Jets new West Coast Offense will feature many short/quick passes to get the rock in the playmakers’ hands. This fits Geno, as Geno completed 112 passes at, or behind the line of scrimmage during his career at WVU. That’s music to a Jets fan’s ears, because it fits the script for new OC Marty Mornhinweg, and his quick-passing-attack mentality.

Geno makes the proper read and gets ready to throw, as he watches the Texas CB’s feet get crossed up.

Smith has a good release point here, helping him get enough on it and zip it in there.

He fits the ball to the left of the Longhorn LB, and to the right (away) from the CB.

You couldn’t walk and hand it to the guy in a better place! Threading the needle at it’s finest!

Speaking of Tone before, the former Super Bowl MVP made arguably the biggest catch of all time, in the corner of the end zone. Although it is not a fade, the corner of the end zone is where he earned the clutch nickname “Tone-Time”. Point of the matter is, Geno Smith is very accurate with these kinds of throws, in the corner of the end zone. I certainly believe Geno Smith and Santonio will create similar chemistry to Cam Newton and Steve Smith.

If you’re a fan of “Tone-Time”, you’ve got to be licking your chops seeing this!

Normally, we end the Geno Project with something he needs to improve on, but let’s just say that EVERY QB needs to improve regarding his accuracy, unless you’re Aaron Rodgers of course. Please don’t get it confused. Geno Smith and Aaron Rodgers are NOT in the same league when it comes to accuracy. My point exactly, Geno needs to improve his accuracy…. his rookie year, and every year.

Stay tuned for The Geno Smith Project Vol. IV!

It’s very early, but Geno Smith has been doing all of the right things so far. He has been doing extra classroom work, especially with his offensive linemen. He also has performed fairly well at camp so far, although he and Mark Sanchez threw underwhelming interceptions last week. Geno has also showed that he can handle the media so far. He does not take the bait when the media goes “fishing” for circus-like controversy.

But the question is, and the one that remains is, can Geno win this job outright, and be the starter when the Jets take on Tampa Bay in week one?

The answer to that one will not come without a coming to a head of 2 different philosophies. Whose? The philosophies of head coach Rex Ryan, and general manager John Idzik.

Let me tell you what I mean. Don’t get me wrong, ladies and gentlemen. Both of these two men are doing, and saying the right things. John has talked over and over again how much he has enjoyed working with Rex Ryan to date. They have been “joined at the hip”, as Idzik put it at one point. The point being that he has gone on and on about how they are on the same page about everything.

We know that coach Ryan is never shy about praising, and that has been the case when talking about his relationship with Idzik as well. He talks about how he and John have a similar background with having Dads that were in the game. He says that everything each of them does is right on the same page, the page of making the New York Jets a better team. Everything is for the good of the New York Jets.

Unfortunately, all of that being true is just not logical.

Well let me put it this way, the fact that they both are working for the good of the football team is logical. What ISN’T logical is the idea that they are on the same page in every way possible about making that goal happen. It just doesn’t make any sense.

John Idzik hasn’t been in his position for six months. He is in no way, shape, or form, on a short leash. Idzik will have multiple years to prove his worth before he has to answer with his job. Therefore, yes, John’s focus is on making the team better, but better in the long-term. He doesn’t have to win now.

Rex Ryan, on the other hand, is the definition of a lame duck coach. It is not normal for a general manager to be forced to keep an incumbent coach as a condition of his hire. John is going to want to bring a guy in that he is comfortable with. The only way for Rex to fight this problem is to win. Do you think he will be OK with turning the reigns over to another rookie quarterback unless he is absolutely sure? I don’t.

So this is where the philosophies will come to a head. Will Idzik’s forward thinking win out, or will Rex be able to keep a strangle hold on the situation? The decision will certainly bring that elephant in the room to the forefront, and fast.
