In this training camp profile, here’s a breakdown of cornerback Morris Claiborne who enters his first season as a member of the New York Jets.

Last season, the defensive secondary of the New York Jets left much to the imagination. Opposing quarterbacks and receiving options had an absolute field day against the positional group. It was so bad, the Jets effectively cleaned house of aging veterans and unproductive players to usher in a youth movement.

Besides drafting two new safeties in this year’s draft and hoping their other in-house cornerbacks step up this upcoming season, the Jets also made a few free agent signings. Cornerback Morris Claiborne, after spending the past five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, was brought into the mix with hopes of staying healthy and returning to being an impact player.

Below is a training camp profile looking back last year, an outlook for this upcoming season, and what might end up happening in training camp.

2016 SEASON REVIEW

Last season with the Cowboys, Claiborne once again suffered another injury, this time around to his groin as to which it kept him sidelined for the final half of the regular season.

In the seven games he played, Claiborne totaled 24 tackles, one interception, and a forced fumble. Injuries defined him in 2016 as he missed a significant amount of time and even though he returned in the NFL Playoffs, once again got hurt with a rib injury.

2017 SEASON OUTLOOK

The Jets took a big risk in signing Claiborne since again, he’s injury prone but when healthy, can be one incredible cornerback. He has the speed, skill-set, and keen defensive traits to cover any premier receiving target but needs to stay healthy and on the field if he’s to be consistent in his efforts.

Expect to see him starting come Week 1 and hopefully, do his part in the revamped secondary of the Jets. Claiborne has a plethora of experience which will undoubtedly help all the younger players around him. Expect to also see Claiborne be one of the vocal leaders on the field and in the locker room for the Jets.

TRAINING CAMP PREDICTION

Claiborne should have no issues locking up a starting cornerback spot on the Jets. They don’t have much talent at cornerback as Claiborne is easily one of their better options of the positional group. If he can stay healthy throughout training camp and hone his craft with his new teammates, Claiborne should stand out every single time he’s competing on the field.
