As the New York Jets officially began organized team activities earlier this week, defensive end Sheldon Richardson once again got his name in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Let’s paint a picture, shall we? It’s the first day of organized team activities. The New York Jets are doing their best to rebuild the right way. Usually, rebuilding is all about putting your younger players in a position to succeed. They’ll be earning valuable regular season experience with the hopes of finding many building blocks for a brighter future.

It’s best to keep the headlines about the product on the field, not on immature comments by a player who consistently has a plethora of off-the-field issues. Literally, on the first day of OTAs, defensive end Sheldon Richardson made a reference to his former teammate, Brandon Marshall.

In an article written by Rich Cimini of ESPN, here is what Richardson said:

“The locker room is a whole lot easier to get along with now,” Richardson told reporters. Asked to elaborate, he smiled and said, “Man oh man, y’all are thirsty. Let’s just say I’ve got 15 reasons why it’s better.”

Seriously? After numerous incidents and being tardy to mandated team meetings, the first day of OTAs Richardson has to say such nonsense? Say what you want about Marshall, Richardson had no reason to say what he did in the grand scheme of things. Marshall is now a member of the New York Giants and has moved on from his tenure with the Jets.

This is another classic case of Richardson’s immaturity as he’s making sure he’s doing everything possible to find himself off the Jets faster than a New York minute. They’ve been trying to trade him since last season but to no avail. It’s hard to find a team willing to acquire Richardson due to issues like this.

For a player that’s been suspended several times and is on the outside looking in, Richardson did himself no favors by taking a jab at a former teammate. It clearly shows how unprofessional he is and why he’ll never reach his true potential. Needless to say, once Richardson is finally shipped out of town, the locker room will indeed be a whole lot easier for those smarter players that see the bigger picture.
