The NY Jets might not have the best quarterback situation heading into 2016 but one thing is for sure, they need to stay away from entertaining the thought of bringing someone in like RG3.

At the current time of this writing, the only two quarterbacks the Jets have signed to their roster are Geno Smith and Bryce Petty. Ryan Fitzpatrick is a free agent and may or may not return in 2016. Nothing is ever for certain when it comes to potential free agents since for all we know, a team can come in via free agency and swoop away Fitzpatrick with a big money contract.

In all likelihood, Fitzpatrick should be back and under center for the Jets next season. Even head coach Todd Bowles said if Fitzpatrick returns, there would be no debate as he would officially be deemed the starting quarterback for the Jets next season.

When it comes to Smith, there is also uncertainty when it comes to how the Jets plan to handle him this off-season. General manager Mike Maccagnan said both Smith and Petty will be evaluated this off-season to determine what is best for the team. In my honest opinion, I believe the Jets will keep Smith around as he doesn’t cost much salary cap wise, knows the offensive system well and has starting experience.

Petty is a developmental kind of player that isn’t NFL ready at all. He’ll need another season or two learning from the sidelines as one can imagine he learned a lot under Fitzpatrick this past season. I also don’t see the Jets moving him at all since they’re grooming him as a potential future franchise quarterback.

Now, in the scenario that Fitzpatrick bolts via free agency, the Jets would be in the market for a starting caliber quarterback.

All those that play quarterback will enter free agency looking for better opportunities elsewhere, especially someone like quarterback Robert Griffin III. While there is no denying his unique abilities, the Jets should stay far away from him.

The Jets brought in a brand new leadership regime to help bring respectability to the organization. Maccagnan has done some amazing things so far in his first season with the Jets and Bowles did a fantastic job leading this team to a 10-6 record. There is still room for improvement of course but with those two and the coaching staff of the Jets only getting better over time, the sky is the limit for this team over the next few years.

Bringing in Griffin would be a step backwards and be Tebow 2.0 all over again. Griffin is too injury prone and above all else would bring a media circus with him due to his past history with the Washington Redskins. I’m sure he’ll find a new home come free agency but for the Jets to keep them heading in the right direction, should look elsewhere instead of taking an injury-prone quarterback that rode the bench last year.

More jets: End of the Chris Ivory era on the Jets could be coming soon

Overall, the Jets should not take a chance with someone like Griffin. In the event they can’t secure Fitzpatrick and he’s no longer a starting option for the team, they could either go after another quarterback like Drew Stanton, Kirk Cousins or even Chad Henne which would go well with how the Jets’ offense executes. Of course, the Jets could give Smith one last shot at glory and just draft another quarterback to develop alongside Petty if such a scenario happens.

Who knows what will transpire over the coming months for the Jets when it comes to their quarterback situation but due to his injuries and reckless style of play, Griffin should never be considered a starting option to be under center for the Jets.
