NY Jets: Fans shouldn’t lose hope

Following a tough loss to the Patriots, fans of the NY Jets are undoubtedly disappointed. However, unlike the mediocre squads of the past few years, this team is talented and poised to make the NFL playoffs.

After flying out of the gate to a 4-1 start, Jets fans were extraordinarily hopeful leading up to the team’s game against the undefeated Patriots.

The fans had every reason to be optimistic. Apart from the occasional debacle (ie. infamous “Butt Fumble” game), the Jets usually play the Patriots close. Last year, despite posting an atrocious 4-12 overall record, the team lost both of its matchups to the Patriots by a combined three points.

Surely, with a rebuilt roster and a new head coach, the team could finally get over the hump and crush the Patriots.

Unfortunately for the Jets, story tale endings often never make it past the book. The team played well but suffered a heartbreaking 30-23 loss to the Patriots.

There are many elements of the game that could be broken down. One could write about how the Jets’ offense failed to capitalize in the red zone (including a brutal drop by Brandon Marshall in the end zone), or how the team lost the turnover battle (-1). Injury concerns to Chris Ivory, Nick Mangold and Calvin Pryor also merit discussion.

But I know Jets fans. After all, I am one.

Right now, Jets fans need more than in-depth analysis or stats. They need hope. They need a reassuring voice promising them it will all be okay.

It will be okay. I promise.

Yes, upsetting the unbeaten Patriots and taking first place in the AFC East would have been incredible. But, to examine the greater picture, the Jets just played an incredibly close and well-fought game against the best team in football.

The Jets are also 4-2 in a weak AFC, and have a favorable upcoming schedule.

Of the Jets’ remaining ten games, only two of them are against teams that currently have winning records.

If the team can even manage to win six of their final ten games, they would post a 10-6 record. Considering the Jets are only one of two AFC teams that currently has a winning record without leading their division (along with the Steelers), ten wins should easily clinch a wild card playoff berth.

Long story short, if the Jets win the games they’re supposed to and take care of business, the team is almost guaranteed a playoff spot. After four consecutive non-winning seasons, what Jets fan wouldn’t sign up for that?
