New York Jets: Todd Bowles gives player updates

facebooktwitterreddit

It’s not going to be a day of easy decisions for the New York Jets as they trim down their final roster to 53 players. With preseason football coming to an end, the Jets will need to take a long look at game film and other reasons to keep players over others. It’ll be tough but head coach Todd Bowles will make the best decisions needed for his team to succeed this upcoming season.

We here at The Jet Press would like to thank the Media Relations Department of the Jets for sending us a complete transcript from Bowles regarding player updates, what goes into the decision-making process and much more. Enjoy!

On Matt Flynn and Josh Johnson

I thought they both came in and did a good job. Matt came in early on and started the game for us and made a heck of a throw on the touchdown play, put touch on it, which is hard to do because we ran it a couple times in a row. He threw the ball to the sideline pretty well. Josh came in, like I said, you know him, he can always run. But he threw some good passes as well. He finished the game for us. I thought they both did a good job.

On if there were any injuries…

No.

On how hard of a decision the backup quarterback position will be…

It’ll be tough. They bring just different dynamics to the game. One can run and make some throws and get out of the pocket. The other one can manage the game as well throw some timely balls and see the defenses. So, it’ll be tough. We’ll discuss it tonight. We’ve got some good players. It’ll be some hard cuts.

On how Zac Stacy has progressed from the first preseason game…

Zac’s been consistent. Zac’s been very consistent. He’s tough. We knew he was tough with the blocking, he can catch the ball, he can run the ball. He’s been doing a great job every week. He’s been Mr. Consistency.

On if not playing Jason Babin means he is considered similar to a starter…

No, I wanted to see (Deion) Barnes. I haven’t seen him play and I really wanted to get a good look at him before I made a decision on him.

On if he has a tough decision at wide receiver…

Yes, we have a bunch of tough decisions, wide receiver, defensive back, offensive line. We have a bunch of guys that can play football in this league. And we’ve got, numbers wise, there are going to be some tough decision to make.

On Flynn’s interception…

It was his read. I thought he got rid of it too late. The guy made a heck of a play.

On Chris Owusu

We’re going to look at the film. We’ve got a lot of plays. They all played tonight, so we’re going to look at the film and decide in the morning. He did some good things as well as all of them. They all did some good things tonight, so that will be tough.

On who would be the backup quarterback if the season started tomorrow…

We’ve got some tough decisions to make tonight and when we know, you’ll know.

On how Lorenzo Mauldin is progressing…

I’ve got to see Lorenzo run. He’s getting better. I haven’t seen him move. They say he’s been moving around a lot better. I’ll take a look at him next week and see where he is.

On how he evaluates Erin Henderson

He got hurt. He showed a lot. He was the same player in practice as he was in the one game he played. He was smart, he was athletic and he was aggressive. He showed a lot in that first game.

On if Jeremy Kerley is on the roster bubble…

We’ll make those decisions tonight. We’ll have those decisions tomorrow. We’ll make those decisions tonight. We’ll see. We have a bunch of good receivers, so we’re going to take a look at them.

On if he has a reaction to Tom Brady’s suspension being nullified…

No, not really, other than it’s over.
