Darrelle Revis and his triumphant return to the New York Jets needs no introduction. He’s back. We’re pumped. Now it’s time to analyze what he brings to the table as he prepares for training camp. It’s been two years since the best cornerback in the league was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following a devastating ACL injury. In a recent article by Greg Bishop in Sports Illustrated featuring Revis on the cover, the Super Bowl champ reveals he considered retirement following the surgery:

"“I did think about retiring,” Revis says. “I had never been seriously injured before, and I didn’t know how to handle it.”"

We’re sure glad that never happened. And speaking of which, the man won a Super Bowl while away! With the New England Patriots of all teams! Our star draft pick injured, traded away, dumped after one season, picked up by the Pats and has his best season at corner on his way to the Lombardi trophy. Talk about turning around your luck.

All that is behind him now, as he explains in the SI article. He’s focused on being a Jet and reestablishing his home in New York. He’s the undisputed leader of a significantly improved defense. Along with Revis, the Jets added Antonio Cromartie and Marcus Gilchrist to a secondary that ranked among the league worst in defending against the pass.

What can Jets fans expect from Revis heading into training camp? Well, expect more of the same: pure, absolute greatness preparing to defend against every #1 receiver lined up across from him. He’s healthy, coming off a spectacular season capped by a title.

Fans attending camp will have a real treat awaiting them when Revis inevitably lines up against Brandon Marshall when the first-team offense and defense pair off. Darryl Slater of NJ.com details their encounter during voluntary veteran minicamp:

"Late in practice, the first-team offense ran a two-minute drill against the first-team defense. Wide receiver Brandon Marshall lined up against cornerback Darrelle Revis — a matchup of two of the Jets’ biggest stars. lobbed a pretty pass to Marshall, over Revis, who immediately complained to an official that Marshall grabbed his jersey. You can already see that famous Revis competitiveness coming out, two days into a voluntary minicamp. A couple minutes later, Marshall got the better of Revis again, out-leaping him in the front corner of the end zone for a touchdown catch of about 15 yards. Revis, who is 5-11, mistimed his jump against Marshall, who is 6-4. This was by far the most dramatic moment of the day Geno Smith"

The Jets may still have questions and concerns around various positions, but cornerback, on either side, is not one of them.

Finally, here’s a great video discussing the impact of Revis on that SI cover:
