We are under a month away from the beginning of the free agency period. March 10th is the first day we really get to see what type of general manager Mike Maccagnan is going to be. He has said that although he wants to build the Jets through the draft, they will be active in free agency as well. The Jets have a lot of work to do.

This free agency group is one of the deepest in recent memory at wide receiver. Earlier in the week, we explored the possibility of the signing of Demaryius Thomas. We know that he would be a great fit, and that Eric Decker is actively recruiting him. However, the Broncos may end up using the franchise tag on him, keeping him in Denver for Peyton Manning, who seems to be leaning towards returning. So, we look at other potential free agent wide receivers.

Today, we are going to profile Randall Cobb.

Randall Cobb has spent his entire four-year career with the Green Bay Packers, coming into his own this past season. Take a look at his career stats to date:

Receiving & Rushing

Cobb was actually on his way to a big season in 2013, leading the team with 29 receptions and ranking second on the team with 378 receiving yards. However, a week six knee injury kept Cobb out until the final game of the year.

Cobb finished the 2014 season with career highs in receptions with 91, yards with 1,287, and 12 touchdowns. He is only 24 years old, and clearly at the top of his game with no signs of slowing down.

According to Pro Football Focus, Randall Cobb graded out quite well. His overall grade was a 12.3, ranking him 9th overall in the NFL. Cobb’s passing game grade was 14.1, good for 8th in the league. The only portion of his game we would like to see improve is his blocking, which was a -2.1.

When you into the numbers a little bit further, an interesting stat comes up. Aaron Rodgers posted a rating of 134.3 on passes thrown Cobb’s way, the NFL’s top number. Randall Cobb is a more than reliable target at wide receiver, and still has time to get even better.

Randall Cobb is coming off of a very friendly contract. His rookie deal only averaged a shade over $800,000 per season. 2014 was the first season that Cobb cost over $1 million against the salary cap. Needless to say, Randall Cobb has outperformed his rookie deal.

Cobb will get paid. He may not bring in Dez Bryant or Demaryius Thomas money, but Cobb will earn a hefty raise. It will be interesting to watch the WR market get set, when someone sets the bar by signing. But, the Jets have an estimated amount of cap space at nearly $49 million.

The Jets have the ability to bring in Randall Cobb. With there being less and less of a shot at Demaryius Thomas and Dez Bryant, the Jets need to think long and hard about bringing in Randall Cobb.

We all know he would be an instant upgrade.
