This afternoon as practice was underway, General Manager John Idzik made an announcement to the media that cornerback Dimitri Patterson was suspended indefinitely for his unexcused absence from the game against the Giants and Sunday’s practice. This caps off a wild weekend for Patterson that was chronicled here.
Prior to his suspension announcement, Patterson tried to downplay the situation. Here is a tweet from ESPN reporter Josina Anderson:
#Jets CB Dimitri Patterson just text me this: “Yes, I’m ok and I’m not going AWOL either. Comical.”

According to an article by Josh Peter of USA Today, Patterson added:
“There’s no need for concern,” Patterson told USA TODAY Sports before practice. “The reports about me going AWOL are totally false. I have my reason for missing those days. I’m not going to go into specifics, but I’ve discussed those reasons with the people I need to discuss them with. But as far as going AWOL, no, that’s totally false.”
Later in the day John Idzik announced Patterson’s suspension. He explained:
NYJ: John Idzik says CB Dimitri Patterson has been suspended indefinitely & team will “gather more information on what led to his behavior.”

AP’s Dennis Waszak Jr. (@DWAS73) had Idzik’s thoughts about how long the suspension might last:
Idzik says he thinks current suspension will be “brief,” but #Jets will issue further discipline after going over all facts, etc

So Patterson is suspended until further notice and the Jets need to figure out by Saturday if having him on the roster helps the team or hurts them.
