Why Do we Stick with the New York Jets?

(Disclaimer: This is one of my philosophical posts, that have started since I was ill. Try not to lose your lunch if it’s too corny for you.)

We have the greatest fans in the world, don’t we? We certainly have some of the most passionate, rabid fans in the world. You know what I mean? You can never curb the enthusiasm of a Jets fan, no matter what the team is going through. Jets fans are here to stay.

Lately, I have been thinking about that, and wondering why? Why do we stay? It’s not like we have been given a lot of reason to celebrate with this team. The heartbreak has outweighed the jubilation significantly. Heaven’s sake, most of us have lived through more losing seasons than winning seasons. A majority of the people reading this, myself included, were not alive at the time of the Super Bowl. We have suffered with the Jets through a lifetime to date of screaming, drinking, heartache and pain.

Why do we do it?

Because they are always there for us.

What am I talking about? A lot of things change in life. Friends come and go. Jobs are lost, new ones are gained. Family situations change, they grow, unfortunately they reduce. We marry, we divorce. Situations in our lives change, and they change all the time.

But who is always there, and will always be there? The New York Jets. From August through December, or God willing January, the Jets are always there, like clockwork. Whether they excite us, anger us, make us happy, or disappoint us, they are always there. That’s for sure. And that’s important. With everything else changing on us all the time, we hold onto consistency.

The Jets are here for us consistently, no matter what. That’s why we stay, because we can count on them.

Every season, for more then a few decades now, I ask myself that same question. Why do I route for this bunch of misfits? I mean, every season starts out with a promise, and ends always in disappointment! Why am I still a Jet fan? I watched the Jets win a super bowl, and have been waiting my whole life to see another! The Jets are the team of my youth, I grew up a short distance to Shea Stadium. I have fond memories of my father and I going to games together until he passed. Laugh if you will, but the Jets had Fireman Ed, he was a great guy! My parents were Jet fans, my son grew up a Jet fan, and my grandson is a Jet fan. Maybe its just become a family tradition?

Very good point Paul. When you grow up with a particular team, it’s difficult to make a change, unless you move out of town. Even then, it is still not so easy. Maybe we just get “hooked”.

Alan you’re absolutely right but that’s a line right out of Jimmy Fallon’s mouth about the Red Sox in Fever Pitch

Hey….sometimes a movie captures the right idea. It’s not stealing since I changed the subject matter. A little poetic license but it was from that movie.

That is a question I have asked myself a thousand times. But hey, if the Pats – who once were a carbon copy of the Jets – can have a dynasty then maybe someday……
