News broke today, yes it was a story, that Rex Ryan was in Rio de Janeiro watching the World Cup soccer match between Belgium and Russia. Rex Ryan’s vacations have been a hot topic in the last few years whether it was being spied on by the Daily News on a tropical island, or running with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain and now being spotted at the World Cup. It goes to show you that Rex Ryan=news. Plus with the access he has to sporting events like the Stanley Cup Finals he is ubiquitous. Why is he so popular and polarizing at the same time? Charisma. I’ve never been in the same room with someone who had more and I worked at Madison Square Garden as an intern and was at a motivational speech Magic Johnson gave, so I’ve been around some charismatic people.

Back during Superbowl week here in New York City the Jets had an event called Jets House which put fans in an intimate setting with current players, former players and coaches. You can read my post on that event here. On a day where Joe Klecko, Marvin Jones and Freeman McNeil were present, the person everyone came to see was Rex Ryan. He did a Q&A session with the fans that lasted 20 minutes and had every person in the building hanging on every word. It was almost weird to watch him smile then see the entire room smile too. Ryan just has a way of connecting with people that makes him the leader he is today.

No one would even notice or care if Tom Coughlin, Joe Philbin or Doug Marrone were there in Rio. The press would barely bat an eyelash if most of the players were there but Rex Ryan connects with people, positively or negatively, and that makes him newsworthy. It’s Rex Ryan’s world we are just living in it.

Rex has a personality, like it or not. I’d much rather the focus be on the team and the players then on the head coach however. The NY media thrives for a “Rex-ism”, they stumble over each other to get an interview. and unfortunately they twist his words. Rex is outspoken, and often brings more negative attention to the Jets, he may be charismatic, but just as many media types hate him as love him. Idzik has muzzled him pretty well since he arrived, I can only hope it continues! Rex is better off concentrating on the job at hand, then looking for his next headline!!
