Sheldon Richardson Sets Bad Precedent for Himself with the New York Jets

Sheldon Richardson made 100% accurate comments regarding Mo Wilkerson yesterday, but he still should never have made them.

For anyone who missed it, as reported by Brian Costello in Friday’s Post, our defensive rookie of the year has been keeping an eye on Wilkerson’s contract situation, and feels the Jets need to get it done now for his fellow lineman.

“Hopefully, they do the right thing and pay the man,” Richardson said. “That’s coming from me. That’s somebody I want around. But it’s just business. You have no control over it. “He’s due for a paycheck, though. Believe that, he’s due for a paycheck.”

Sheldon Richardson is 100% right. We don’t need to explain the value of Mo Wilkerson. 2nd team All-Pro last year, posting 10.5 sacks. I am not sure there is an argument against the fact that Wilkerson is the anchor of our top unit on the team, the defensive line.

Making the comments in public, however, is a flawed idea. Why? I will give you a hint. He has gray hair and took over for Mike Tannenbaum.

Do you think John Idzik doesn’t read the papers? I am quite sure that he does. He works so hard on the message that gets out, there is no way he doesn’t essentially check his work by seeing the message that actually did get out.

What happens when someone dare ask him about a contract situation? He immediately closes down the conversation. No public conversations about contracts. Period, that is the Jets way now. I would guarantee that Idzik noticed this, and it is going to make him keep an eye on Sheldon.

I would hate to see a terrific player in the cross-hairs of the team for something so silly.

Idzik can only do one of two things pay or don’t pay, it’s that simple…either way the media will find a way to try and make an issue out of it.

True…I just think in the new Jets way of doing things, talking about it is a bad idea.
