Matt Smith Mock Draft: The New York Jets Select............

Matt Smith, if you don’t recognize the name, is an NFL media analyst. You see a lot of his work on the NFL network for the fantasy football programs. However, he too has posted his latest mock draft update. In the past, he has had the Jets taking offense, who does he have in the latest version?

This is the year. We say it before every draft … “The Jets have to draft offense.” In 2014, Rex finally acquiesces.

Take a look at his full mock by clicking here.

With Eric Ebron off the table just one pick before the Jets, this is quite the likely scenario.  The Jets are looking for a playmaker on the outside, and they liked what they saw in Brandin Cooks.

Marqise Lee is still available here at 18, but from all of the reports, the Jets’ scouting team liked Cooks more than they did Lee, and their interest seems more active in Cooks.

Some have speculated that the only way the Jets don’t go offense with the first pick is if they pick a corner.  In this scenario?  Won’t happen, not with Justin Gilbert and Darqueze Dennard off the table.

Good logical pick here.

It would be a solid pick at # 18. Of course most mocks don’t factor in trade scenarios. The Jets own 12 picks and there is no way they are drafting and signing 12 players. They have multiple options and I think they will be active trade wise. The glaring need at WR and CB need to be addressed in the first two rounds as I see it. So you may see them try to move up in the first to grab their man. If it is truly Cook as has been rumored, then they likely will trade up in the second to grab their corner of choice. I’m pretty sure Rex will be lobbying to move up in the first for a corner, but with Idzik in the driver’s seat and that many picks, anything is possible! The draft remains promising.

Can we please stop acting like Tanny, that is what got us into all this trouble. Trade down and accumulate picks for next year is a much better scenario. We don’t need to be giving away picks by trading up. Remember we have 12 picks this year, Tanny had only 13 from 2009 to 2011. We should NOT go back to the Tanny ways. Draft as many players as possible since it increases your odds of finding gold. There is no guarantees including the first round so for God’s sake don’t trade up.

Completely agree with Frank. Idzil will not trade up, if anything trade down. And do not be surprised if they choose another defensive player in the 1st round, such as Anthony Barr or Dee Ford or one of the corners. Extremely deep

I don’t see us trading down unless the guy they want first is getting no interest. Maybe they would trade down in the second round, but who knows, maybe they keep em all and see what they get. I don’t see Idzik doing a lot of maneuvering in this draft, I think he wants a young team. He doesn’t want to have to sign too many short term contracts on guys whose careers are winding down next year.

Frank we have 12 picks. That’s a ton of picks for one draft, especially with 6 players coming in the later rounds. I’m not saying they will move up, just pointing out they have those options. They need a starting corner and a starting WR, To move up in the first, they would likely have to give up their own 18, a mid rounder and maybe a sixth or 7th to move up and grab a guy Rex really likes. The second round move would likely even be cheaper, possibly a 4th and a 6th rounder, again not extremely expensive, and they get their guy. With two top needs, and a few holes to fill yet, I see very little possibility they trade down from 18. I’d prefer to have quality over numbers myself. For now….In Idzik we trust! By the way, I think Rex is screaming in N.J. for his corner back…I have to believe he’d like Dennard or Gilbert…that would likely require moving up…not saying its going to happen, just saying they have the options.

I still don’t get why you don’t think we will draft and sign all of our picks? Three teams drafted 11 or more players and they all signed all their picks.Only rookies drafted in the first two rounds are remotely cost prohibitive as third round through the 7th are in the 450,000 range and not guaranteed. I have no problem making all the picks as if we draft well we might get 3 starters,3 guys close to starting and the rest to play special teams and provide badly needed depth. If you look at the present roster it is loaded with mediocre talent and there is clearly an urgent need to upgrade almost every position with the exception of the defensive line.

Final roster is 53 guys….unless you plan to do some cutting..the Jets won’t sign all 12. Its not a salary concern, since the NFL set guide lines for draftees. They own 6 picks in the first four rounds…then 6 more in the later rounds. If they can ace the first 4 rounds they will be in good shape. Competition is good, signing all 12 gives you extra competition, but at a price where you don’t get to see much from each draftee, since the reps have to be spread around. I think you might see them trade 3 or 4 players…move around the board. There really is little advantage to signing 12 and then cutting half of them, not when you can trade them, move up the board to get a player with more talent and upside. Just the way I see it Ronbo, I surely don’t have the answers! LOL

Paul, yes 53 is the final # but as of this moment we have only 22 players that are locks for the final 53.There are about 10 more that are likely to make it but that’s where the 12 picks come in to play.Lets assume we do have the 32 solid players that will make the team. As of this moment there are about 66 players on the roster.
many of which you and I both know are not what we are looking for in terms of quality players.Subtracting our so-called 32 locks(& likly’s) that leaves about 34 plus the the 12 picks. The trick then becomes to pick the best 21 out of the 66 we will have to choose from. Obviously there will be injuries and more F/A signings so these numbers will change but the idea is to upgrade the roster and the more choices we have the more likely we are to find a few extra players.

          • Paul Newbold

I can follow that math. I think it boils down to a philosophy of building a team. Sign as many as you can and see who pops through OTA’s and camp, and keeping the best. OR Drafting fewer but higher rated players. I’m just saying they have the flexibility to do so, they may sign all 12. I honestly have no idea what Idzik’s “plan” is!! The draft will tell if he has one at all and how good it might or might not be. With 6 picks in the first 4 rounds…they should come out with some good talent in a deep draft no matter what they choose. Here’s hoping they ace it!!

The great thing is that the reciever class is so deep. You guys could grab a great prospect, even outside of the first round. I’m not a big fan of what you guys picked up during free agency. They could possibly become playoff contenders if they have a good draft.

    • Alan Schechter

Not a big fan of Eric Decker, huh?

Paul, please don’t get me wrong, you are one of the very best jet posters an I always enjoy your observations. Probably because I agree with 99% of them. I was wondering if you posted on Randy’s Radar on the Jets blog before it became the” face book” disaster it now is? Randy had a great passionate group of regulars but the new format has really not worked out very well as there are a lot of fans that post there now that are either fans of other teams who make ridiculous comments or just clueless casual fans who have no idea what they are talking about. Sadly only a few of the old gang bother anymore S.C.Joe,Tom Spicer,Gary C, jet Fan Frank and maybe one or two others.
