The Jets signed a receiver today, though it is not the one a lot of people were talking about. As reported by Manish Mehta the Jets have come to terms with former Oakland receiver and return man Jacoby Ford. It was reported yesterday that Ford was visiting the facility which meant it was a more than likely to happen signing.
Jacoby Ford is the prototypical “burner” type of receiver having clocked in 40′s of under 4.3 in the past. His speed has mostly failed to translate to the field save for 4 kickoff’s returned for touchdowns, but this is a good signing none the less. The amount is not yet known, but it is likely to be a cheap short term deal knowing Idzik, and considering that our current receivers coach, Sanjay Lal, used to coach Ford, Idzik was likely very well informed on what he was getting.
Ford will be given the chance this season to compete for a starting spot alongside Jeremy Kerley and Eric Decker. He will compete for this position with Stephen Hill and David Nelson, and could end up pushing them to develop further. This could prove to be especially helpful to Hill, and no matter how you slice it the Jets have added further depth to what was last year one of the worst receiving corps in the league.
