There has been a lot of talk over the last several days has been about acquiring DeSean Jackson. We know Michael Vick wants to get it done, as does a lot of the Jets’ fan base. It’s not surprising, I mean, when have the Jets had this type of dynamic player on offense? Anyone want to guess? I can’t, as it has been quite some time.
But the possibility that remains as the elephant in the room is, what happens if we don’t get him? What if DeSean goes somewhere else? Who else can the Jets get to add to the wide receiver depth chart?
Enter Miles Austin.
Here are his career stats so far:
Receiving & Rushing
These are the stats of a pretty good consolation prize, no?
He has actually scored more TD’s receiving (34), than DeSean Jackson (32). Austin is only one year removed from 66 catches for 943 yards and six touchdowns, so it is not as if he hasn’t played well in recent years.
Before that, he posted back to back seasons of 1,000 receiving yards (2009-2010). Austin posted 18 touchdowns over those two seasons as well. When healthy, he was a dynamic combination with Tony Romo in Dallas.
That’s the key. Is Miles Austin healthy? If you look at his stats, he has been a dynamic player when healthy. If not? Not so much.
Am I saying this guy is as good as DeSean Jackson? No. But, if Jackson goes elsewhere, and the Jets are looking for somewhere else to go, look to Miles Austin. He is a talented receiver in his own right, would come at a cheaper price, and not bring some of the concerns that Jackson does.
