Free agency doesn’t always have to mean bringing in a new player.
The Jets have a hole at the right guard position that needs filling. Willie Colon was allowed to test the market, and the Jets showed interest in players, such as Jon Asamoah. Nothing came of those efforts, so there, the hole sits.
Why not bring back Willie Colon to fill that hole?
First of all, there is the continuity factor. We have talked time and time again about the importance of continuity along the offensive line. Not only does a lineman need to know what his job is, he needs to know what everyone else’s job is. The job of the line is dependent upon timing. What better way to get the timing down? Bring back a guy that was already here.
And, it’s not like Willie had a bad year last year. Although his overall PFF grade was -1.1, his running grade placed him fourth overall in the league with an 11.1. He was tied for fifth in the league in pass-blocking efficiency with a rating of 97.5. Willie had an excellent season on the right side of the line.
He is also a Rex guy. Willie Colon brings a nasty attitude to the line, the kind of attitude that Rex loves. Remember the fight that took place in the game against New England? Willie said that all he knew was that he had to “help his brothers”. He had been here not even nearly a full year, and he considered his teammates his brothers. That is exactly the type of veteran influence the team needs.
Bring him back. Willie Colon is the best guard left in free agency, and we know he fits.
