Per Manish Mehta, the New York Jets have been talking to tight end Brandon Pettigrew. Mehta also stated that Pettigrew will have a deal in place with a team soon, however which team that is remains to be seen. He has also drawn interest from the Oakland Raiders and Detroit Lions.
Pettigrew was drafted first round in the 2009 draft by the Detroit Lions. During his tenure with the Lions, he had 284 receptions for 2,828 yards and 16 touchdowns. Last season he had 41 receptions for 416 yards and two touchdowns. Only twice in his five seasons has Pettigrew played all 16 games. The past two years, he’s only played in 14 games each, starting only 11 in 2012.
I like that the Jets are going after Pettigrew. While he can help with the passing game, I am most intrigued by the fact that he can also block well, something that the Jets haven’t had in a tight end in a while. If the Jets can sign him for relatively cheap, John Idzik fills a hole with a nice option, and leaves more money to pursue other opportunities for this team.
