The New York Jets use the franchise tag on Nick Folk

It is official, the Jets have slapped the franchise tag on Nick Folk. As reported by Randy Lange of Newyorkjets.com the Jets have opted to secure the Folk hero by using the franchise tag on him. Folk went 33 for 36 field goals in the the best year of his career last season, including some late game winners, earning the nickname “folk hero” from Rex Ryan and company. The franchise tag for Folk will likely come in at a cost of somewhere around 3 million. The figure is a little steep for sure, and it can be argued that there are plenty of good kickers out there that could have come cheaper. However, after being in competition in the preseason, winning the job and doing what he did this season I feel he has earned a lot of credit and some of that should be monetary. If he can even come close to repeating his performance of last season the Jets will have an important piece of the puzzle solved and locked down. With Folk now locked down for another year the front office can start looking at the teams other areas of need and start working to fill them, so while this is not the ideal solution, it does leave the front office time to deal with larger issues.

Idzik strikes again! There is no way you pay Folk what he is looking for. You keep him for another year and then find his replacement. Paying kickers top dollars is idiotic. When Jerry Jones pays top dollar for his kicker you know that is a sure sign that doing the exact same thing is a very bad idea.
