Scouting the NFL Draft: Michael Sam

Tonight we are going to take a look at another draft prospect. He was the co-SEC defensive player of the year in 2013. He is also a guy with a great football name, especially for a defensive player. His name is Michael Sam, DE from Missouri.

Obviously, I am staying away from the story surrounding Michael Sam, because it doesn’t matter. All I want to know is whether he can play football or not, so that is all we are going to look at.

Here are his stats while he was at the University of Missouri:

Defense & Fumbles

Tackles Def Int Fumbles
Year School Conf Class Pos G Solo Ast Tot Loss Sk Int Yds Avg TD PD FR Yds TD FF
*2010 Missouri Big 12 SR DL 13 4 8 12 3.5 1.0 1 62 62.0 0 0 0 0 0 1
*2011 Missouri Big 12 SR DL 13 16 13 29 3.0 1.5 1 0 0.0 0 2 0 0 0 0
2012 Missouri SEC SR DL 9 13 22 7.0 4.5 0 0 0 0 1 7 1 2
2013 Missouri SEC SR DL 31 17 48 19.0 11.5 2 2
Career Missouri 60 51 111 32.5 18.5 2 62 31.0 0 4 1 7 1 5

He measures in at 6’3″, 255 pounds.

Here are some highlights:

PROS: His biggest asset is his motor. It’s clear from his video that he never gives up on any play. He relentlessly pursues the football, and doesn’t stop until he gets there. His closing speed is terrific as well. There were a couple of plays that he was on the quarterback before you could blink. The guy can tackle as well.

CONS: The biggest issue is his size. At 255 pounds, he will not be big enough to play defensive end in the NFL, he would be more of an OLB. If he is going to be an end, he will have to put on some weight. Being named “Michael Sam” is a great name if he DID play linebacker though.

The Jets could do a lot worse if this player was available in the middle rounds.
