As we move away from the Super Bowl, putting it in our memory, it’s time to resume thinking about 2014. Specifically, about the upcoming NFL draft.

We know the Jets’ desperate need for weapons. They need to make the offense more competitive, if they expect to make an impact at any point. One guy that is making noise as a first round possibility at wide receiver is Florida State’s Kelvin Benjamin. So that is who we are going to talk about tonight.

Here are his stats to get us warmed up:

Receiving Rushing Scrimmage
Year School Conf Class Pos G Rec Yds Avg TD Att Yds Avg TD Plays Yds Avg TD
*2012 Florida State ACC WR 14 30 495 16.5 4 2 33 16.5 0 32 528 16.5 4
2013 Florida State ACC SO WR 14 54 1011 18.7 15 54 1011 18.7 15
Career Florida State 84 1506 17.9 19 2 33 16.5 0 86 1539 17.9 19

That is quite the 2013 season for Kelvin, that’s for sure.

He measures in at 6’5″ and 242 pounds, which is an ideal weight for a wide receiver.

Take a look at some video highlights:

PROS: This guy can use his size to his advantage. All throughout these highlights, you see Kelvin being able to jump and bring the ball down at its highest points. This will be a very translatable skill in the NFL. As will the ability to catch the ball with his hands, which he does every time. His hands are terrific as well. The guy keeps his feet moving after contact, a key to picking up YAC.

CONS: There is no substitute for game reps, even in the college game. With only two seasons under his belt, the question can be raised as to whether or not he is ready for the NFL, although he looks ready to me.

Many mocks that I have read have Kelvin Benjamin being gone before the Jets ever choose. If not, I would take this guy quickly.
