John Idzik, Please Stay Away from Michael Vick

The Super Bowl is over, and all of the teams, including our New York Jets, are back to 0-0. It’s time to start looking forward to 2014. Next up is free agency.

We know that the Jets are going to be in the market for a veteran backup quarterback. One of those players the Jets will be interested in is Michael Vick, if you ask Adam Schefter:

Well, here is one guy’s opinion. I hope they stay far away from Michael Vick.

Don’t get me wrong, there are many GOOD reasons to think about it. We all know that Michael has had success in this league. A talented veteran, Michael Vick definitely is. Being with the Eagles, Michael is more than familiar with Marty Mornhinweg’s offense. As a competitive player, he certainly will push Geno Smith.

If that is where it would stay, Michael Vick would be fine. But pushing Geno is not all it will be.

Michael Vick won’t simply be happy by competing, and sitting on the bench. He has already said he “will be” a starter come week one.  A guy that has already made a boast like that, is not giving any one any reason to believe that Vick will be happy as a backup.  We know the baggage that he comes along with already.    Do we really want a guy with major baggage on our team?

He will do more than push Geno.  He will become a problem on the bench.  We need a veteran that understands that he likely will be a backup, for at least some of the season.  He needs to be a supportive player, not one that boasts that he will start week one.

I, personally, am proud of Vick for the turnaround in his life.  Everyone deserves a second chance, he has taken his and run with it.  That being said, he carries too much with him to be wise for the Jets.

John, please stay away.

If Geno can’t out play an aging, often injured Vick, he shouldn’t be our starting QB any
way. There are other BU QB’s we could take to warm the bench for Geno, but if we want the playoffs, let’s get a QB who has the ability to get us to a division championship, the playoffs and hopefully a SB. If that’s Geno, great. Vick, terrific. Someone else, fine. Let’s get some players in at QB other than Garrard and lets get the competition started.
    Go Jets!!

I couldn’t agree with you more. I’m ready for 2014 already, let’s get it going.

From what I’ve been reading and hearing the consensus among Jets fans is they don’t want Michael Vick.
I for one am exhausted with any form a circus of, or tabloid journalism.

You’re getting this all wrong, Alan! You are giving Geno the starting job already.

“We need a veteran that understands that he likely will be a backup, for at least some of the season. He needs to be a supportive player, not one that boasts that he will start week one.”

That is NOT the way it works in Idzik’s/Jets world anymore. Geno has not been named the starter; on the contrary, he’s been told he will be COMPETING for the job. So whoever Idzik signs, he will sign him with the idea that he can win the job, not with to be a backup to Geno.

So if you are against getting Vick (as I am), do so by reasoning that he is not a fitting starter for the Jets, not that “he won’t be happy as a backup”. The team is not as enamored with Geno as a lot of fans are and after that season, I personally am not convinced he is the future either.

Vick is barely an upgrade on Sanchez at this point! He’s an aging veteran, who has struggled to stay on the field, his accuracy has decreased, his legs slowed, and his interceptions can be as bad as any QB on our roster now. Stay Away from Vick!!

      Wow, we agree again!
