New York Jets’ Top Ten Moments of 2013: Number Eight

Let’s continue the countdown. The countdown is of the top ten moments from the 2013 season for the New York Jets. So far we have covered the goal line stand against the Falcons, and the coming out party for Dee Milliner against the Browns.

So what was number eight?  A connection from a new face to a familiar face.  What am I talking about?  Let’s see.  The number eight moment of 2013 is:

It was early in the season, the first of our two annual matchups against the Buffalo Bills. The game had some buildup, as E.J. Manuel and Geno Smith, both rookies, were taking each other on in this one.

It was a huge coming out party for Bilal Powell, who ran the ball 27 times for 149 yards. The Jets’ offense looked good, but this one was close. A Manuel to Scott Chandler touchdown followed by a two point conversion tied this one up at 20 in the fourth quarter.

Two plays later, Geno Smith dropped back to pass, Santonio Holmes made a double move, Smith hit him in stride, and 69 yards later, the Jets had connected on the game-winner. The Jets won this one by a score of 27-20.

Why does this make the list? First, because it was a clear indication of Santonio’s health, at the time. He clearly was moving well, and was able to get himself open deep. At the time,it was a great sign that he had made his way back from his foot surgery.

Secondly, it was the emerging chemistry between Geno Smith and Santonio Holmes. Early in the season, before injuries took over, Smith was getting things going with Holmes. Having a guy with experience out there, helping a rookie get his feet wet, is invaluable.

That is why this play made the list at number eight.
