Jets Talked About Going After Ed Reed

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

We won’t know yet if the New York Jets will be going after safety Ed Reed yet or not, but we do know that they have talked about it. Rex Ryan said today that himself and general manager John Idzik have talked about going after Reed. He was released earlier this week by the Houston Texans, with head coach Gary Kubiak saying that he wanted to give Reed a chance to play with another team.

Ryan knows Reed well, in fact he coached him. Back when Ryan was the defensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens, Reed was playing safety for him. Asked if Ryan would like to get Reed, he said that he would, but that he would also like to have former players Brandon Moore and Ray Lewis as well. He also said that he isn’t the guy who should be making these decisions. That is where Idzik comes in. It seems Ryan is on board with bringing in Reed, but is Idzik?

Don’t expect the Jets to put in a waiver claim. I think if the Jets are going to go after Reed, they are going to wait until he is officially a free agent and then sign him. If the Jets do go after him, I think it shows that Idzik is taking Rex’s input into consideration, which speaks bounds about their working relationship. I think the Jets should go after him. I’m not criticizing the safeties, but this is a Rex guy. He’s played for Rex, he knows Rex. If anyone can get the best out of Reed at this point, it would be Ryan. He is known for getting the best out of his players, Aaron Maybin is a great example. Plus, Reed would be a nice veteran voice to have in the locker room. It is a low risk yet possibly high reward opportunity. I say go for it.
