New York Jets Sign Dan Carpenter, Billy Cundiff Released

Well the competition between Nick Folk and billy Cundiff has come to an end. However, the kicking competition has not come to and end.

A few minutes ago, it was announced by the York Jets that Billy Cundiff had been released. You would think that meant the end of the kicking competition. It does not.

The team announced that they have signed kicker Dan Carpenter, formerly of the Miami Dolphins. Last season, he kicked to a 22-27 rate, over 80% connected (81.5%). The Jets would mark his 3rd team since the end of last season.

Clearly that shows a lack of confidence in Nick Folk. It’s a little bit surprising, as Nick has won a lot of big games using his leg for us. You would think that deserves a vote of confidence. He doesn’t, however, in the new world order.

Folk kicked only to a 77% kicking rate, which obviously is lower than Carpenter’s at 81.5%. They both have strong legs and are in their twenties, so you really can’t go wrong with either one.

Folk has been bringing up the rear as far as fg% league wide for years now. His touchback percentage has never been high either. We could certainly use a better kicker.

Folk always seems to win these annual challenges. I’d expect he’ll win this one too. Kickers are breed of their own.
